Hello all,

I am very happy at the moment with the sound of my Buffalo coupled through Toslink to a Linux-PC. The signal comes from a build-in HD-audio device. I would now like to try the I2S connection since I read in many places that this gives the best quality. The Buffalo, however, has only three inputs for it. The master clock is missing, but according to the manual this can be tweaked on the circuit board.

Now I have two questions:
1. Is it mandatory to use the external master clock from the I2S source?
2. Which sound cards are known to work with I2S under Ubuntu 8.10 Studio? The ESI Juli@ seems to be able to do this, but it was not indicated how to direct the sound to this output. Other possibilities?

Kind regards,
Eddie

See the right side of this diagram for which pins on the Juli@ are for I2S. http://db.audioasylum.co...orum=pcaudio&n=43044

No. The Buffalo uses it's onboard 80MHz clock as master regardless of the source.

Thank Brian, that makes it a little easier. But how do the Buffalo and the PC stay synchronized?

Also thanks to Dan631 for the very interesting link.

Kind regards,
