Lowering the noise coming out of the the thing. Well, one thing for sure - after the modification it measures a lot better. Question is - is low noise important in your application? In mine it is. So in my application it also sound a lot better. If you go for lowest noise, you can't get by without making the mod.

The mods really aren't that hard. It's well worth doing if you looking for lowest noise. :)
Still if you are happy with it - you need not change it at all.

I will send out new boards and kits with updated parts to all beta users. Then you can built/test both versions.

Thx for clearing up. I don't have a scope so that's why I am asking. Appreciate your work avr.
The pics Russ show us is a little confusing ( for a rookie like me ) I hope there will be some more pictures to come that leaves no doubt what to do in detail.

That's fantastic Brian. When you say new boards, i guess it's the same boards as we already have ? Or have you been able to change anything on the boards you will send out ?

Nope, same boards. Modified boards have not been ordered yet. I will work up some more formal build change docs/diagrams.

Ok, that's great.
The beta version is not bad sounding at all, and if the modification makes them even better, I'm shure we will end up with an outstanding psu.

Perhaps this might explain your situation. If I remember correct you are using the IVY as I/V stage. Correct ?
The IVY has much better PSRR than the Legato - which is the I/V I'm using.
Any less than optimal PSU in front of the Legato is audible. The IVY is more forgiveable.

Until Brian gets an official document created, I have thrown together the instruction from Russ along with some pictures from my build. edit Agggg - forum won't accept a PDF file as a valid attachment. Edited by user Sunday, March 30, 2014 11:40:46 AM(UTC)

Musicman, the goodness of the Placid is much more than it's low noise. :) It is also it's excellent load regulation. We have just been working to improve one aspect - the others were already excellent. :) The load regulation is much better than V1 or V1Q.

And I can promise you that it's easy to hear that you have create a very good psu. @avr. Yes, Ivy with Takman carbon resistors and Elna Cerafine caps is my preferred choise. Sounds great, and no noise at all. But since Brian is kind enough to send me the latest mod kit, it will be very exiting to compare it with the one I already have.

One note, once the mods are made C5 is not necessary and omitting will get you the best results because you will have much higher bandwidth and lower output impedance into higher frequency loads. :)
AVR300 and I both observed the same results. :)

Sry for my english Russ, but when you say omitting the C5, you mean that they can be removed from the pcb ? So simple as that ? or do I need a jumper in place of the C5 ?
Still learning from you guys....

Yes, just remove the C5's from the board.

I usually try not to get too excited about things, but wow - I have tried the new supply with all my outputs stages - and even those with not so great PSRR and sounding so good... I am *very* pleased.

I call a friend and ask him if he could come over and bring his scope with him. Then we did some measurements one both the new and the older one. The difference was quite large in favour of the last version with mods. The musical presentation have never been better here in my system. It simply sounds more realistic. You don't know what noise is until it's gone. Congrats Russ ( and avr )
