I have almost completely redesigned Placd-HD the - new version is ready for beta testers. :)
The new version feeds both the error amp and the voltage reference from the output voltage. To get the best performance I could I substitute the long tailed pair with an OPA209. :)
We also changed the voltage references to ultra low noise and high accuracy types.
This new PS can be very accurately set using a basic formula. No need to use the pot unless you want to.
Other parts that are changed are the power transistors which are now Darlington pairs in a CFP arrangement.
It is working quite well.
We should have them for sale to beta users soon.
Cheers! Russ

So, beta boards are ready, please inform us about price for the beta kit and how to take part in this test (I presume number of boards are limited). Regards.

I am building beta kits as I type this... I plan on sending one kit to Russ first to verify it has everything, then start shipping. I will update the web page to offer them for sale to interested testers. Not sure of the price yet, but it will be cheaper than the non-beta kit (obviously). Note that we have done or own testing, so the end user testing is low risk, and really more of a preview. I hate typing on my phone, so I will post more details later, after I kick my son off of Minecraft and get my computer back. :) Brian Donegan attached the following image(s): IMG_20140301_104047.jpg (220kb) downloaded 96 time(s).You cannot view/download attachments. Ok, the Beta kits are ready. Since they are not officially released yet, I decided not to post them on the regular web site, but offer them here to interested testers. As I said previously, we have tested the new kits and they work great. The remaining boards/kits are for gathering feedback. There is one tweak that needs to be made on these boards: Currently, one leg of R8 goes to GND, but instead needs to be tied to the positive rail (+OUT). It's a simple change. Just run one leg to a different pad, as seen here: The single HD kit is $40 and the BP-HD kit is $65. If you are interested, please send me a PM, and I will send you a PayPal invoice.

Yes, along with precision voltage references instead of LEDs.

Yes, sorry about that. I broke my rule for posting before morning coffee... Here is the BOM for the new version. There is some overlap, but there are some significant differences. Significant changes indeed. I hope I'll receive mine soon. From the BOM I already see I'll need to rewrite some parts of the guide.

My recent HiFi2000 chassis got hung up in customs over the "foot antivibrations" which are antivibration feet. I had to explain it to two different people on two different days. They also wanted to know what I was going to put in the enclosure. I didn't say anything to be funny figuring I'm on a watch list already for the empty chassis with foot antivibrations.... |

Ah, it seems the difference won't justify wasting the older kit for a small economy and shipping will eat it anyway. I wonder if new Placids will have a significant measureable and hearable advantages over old (modded) one, or will it simply be more convenient to assemble and set up... I guess it's worth the wait to see comments of beta testers first :) One more thing I wanted to ask - the placid kits I got are supplied with tall heatsinks which do not fit enclosure I wanted to use. Photos of placids on the website seem to have smaller heatsinks so I guess they got bigger later. What height was the older heatsinks and is it ok if I use them for buffalo\legato with standard voltages\currents? Edited by user Friday, March 21, 2014 9:12:04 AM(UTC)

It's time for soldering. In the BOM of this test version R8 is 100k but I've received it as 470 ohms. What is the exact value of R8?

470R is correct, and note it's placement in my previous post... http://www.twistedpearau...at-output.aspx#post20703Also, you will find both 22pF and 220pF caps for C5 in the BETA kits. 220pF is what you should use. I was trying to get the kits ready quickly so just left the 22pF caps in there. EDIT: Attached updated/corrected BOM Edited by user Thursday, March 27, 2014 5:46:12 PM(UTC)

I'm using beta for 5V output but I can't get VR1 to do anything. VR2 changes output voltage and with it also changes shunted current. With old version everything works well. I've already checked soldering and parts twice but I can't find the fault. Can we get schematic, perhaps?

I need to generate it from CAD but can't do that at work. When I get home I will send it out to the BETA customers.

What height was the older heatsinks and is it ok if I use them for buffalo\legato with standard voltages\currents? Originally the sinks was 1.5". That's the model you see on the pictures. They tend to get hot. They grew to 2" and are now 2.5" tall. I have been running my rig with the 1.5" sinks. If you can control the currents its' doable. Safe player? - use the taller once. Or you can use the floor of the enclosure. I will make 2" heatsinks an ordering option in the future. If any of the beta testers want some, I can send them out. Edited by user Friday, March 21, 2014 5:25:00 PM(UTC)

I have just finished one of my two Placid bp`s. It measure fine and seems to be very stable. The heatsinks is not hot at all. If I should guess, I will say around 30-40 celsius on the heatsinks.
