You could add a ground breaker to your amps' chassis ground connection.

I gather by your response the idea of output transformers is not a good idea?

I guess I was hoping something similar to the way you isolated the inputs the the 4 way SPDIF might work?

I am using some Sowter 9545 output transformers and this is working great

I just thought it would be better to remove the ground loop than to side-step it.

Thanks

Are these transformers directly after the IVY or instead of the IVY?

I may do the ground breaker as well, but have read conflicting reports on there effectiveness.

I have used a SMPS in the DAC to run the Arduino originally thinking it would be easy to isolate it completely from the BIII but it seems this whole grounding/isolation thing is not as easy as I expected.

I'm now having issues with DAC 1 when I try to reintroducing it to my main system which I suspect is directly relate to the grounding/isolation, basically it works fine (DAC 1)with my Kingrex amp that is not earthed & wont work at all with my main amps that are earthed.

I had a look around & I now assume you are not using the IVY & are going directly from the BIII to the transformers.

I was wanting to leave the IVY in place & have transformers after it, if it's possible to get a good result doing so.

I am using the transformer as I/V stages. It should be possible to use the transformers but with a 1:1 ratio. Sowter 3603 is one of them
I did not test it the way you are thinking about

Brian & Russ

What do you think of this approach?

If you think it's ok, which one would you use Angel

The Sowter 3603

Or the http://au.mouser.com/Pro...osRgpRAUUajFHmqyIwwBY%3d

Angel

Given that the IVY has an "Extremely Low!" output impedance and my Linkwitz ASP crossover, that the IVY feeds,(not the amps directly) has a 10K input impedance, if I was to use the 1:1 transformers, would I be better off using the 1k to 1k version? As appose to the 600ohm to 600ohm version.

Either way I guess it's not ideal, but given the Tubeizator I have on DAC 2 has a input impedance of 96K & an output impedance of 30k, how bad could it really be.

So many questions, so little knowledge.

I don't really like using output transformers, so I am not sure what to say. :)

I'd be very interested to know why you don't like using them.

If I cant isolate the outputs I'm going to have to change the ground/earth setup which may not be a bad thing anyway. Ive been reading David Davenports diyAudio article on grounding again, it all seems to make sense until I try & apply it!!!

So maybe I should put Input transformers on my ASP crossover? This is what Bill whitlock says "The point here is that the noise rejection provided by an input transformer with a Faraday-shield is far superior to that provided by an output type

Hmm

I don't like transformers mainly because they inject linearity errors. I am not saying you shouldn't use them, just that I don't. :)

The case has been 95% finished (and DAC playing DQ DAC1) for some time but I am not completely happy with the spray finish which means I haven't been able to put the Birdseye Maple trims on which means no photo's. I have been distracted building Lamps & have had to build 6 as they became popular amongst the family, all love jobs of course.

The other thing I have wanted to do with the 2 DAC projects is replace the VERO boards with purpose made PCB's so I have designed (very simple) and had some boards made. I have 10 of each but probably don't need them all.

There is a 100mm x 50mm (4" x 2") that has a fairly Generic IR board, a Rotary Encoder board, a GND board (Star GND maybe) a GND/Power board & a relay board on it.

The 50mm x 50mm board has 3 relay boards on it, 2 of which are for specific relays & one is generic. All of the relay boards are compatible with the Arduino re coil current.

Anyway if anyone would like 1 or 2 let me know.

David

Hopefully the lamps (Christmas presents) will be finished soon & I can finish DAC1 & get going on the case for DAC2.
