Hallo BIII Friends

In the past 1.5 years the Buffalo III DAC worked really well for me.

I play music from CD Player via S/PDIF-4 board, Sidecar, BIII and IVY output buffer.

From notebook I use USB connection into EXA U21 module at the DAC.

Now, via S/P-DIF the LOCK indicator LED does not flash anymore, and DAC output remains silent.

Via USB and the EXA module, the LOCK indicator LED still works and music comes through, yet accompanied by loud background noise. In the EXA module all indicator LEDs show normal operation, though. Thus, there is no obvious error.

Only now I realized that a new firmware became available and I ordered it.

Do you have any suggestion what I could do or try in order to return the DAC to normal operation ?
Shall I reset the system ?
Checking the supply voltages on the board, everything proved to be allright.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

hello BIII Friends

"Many checks confirmed that the hardware modules are all okay. However, I made the observation that problems are few as long as the volume control in Foobar is set to maximum (but still not working flawlessly with all files), whereas problems get worse when I decrease the volume control in Foobar below the maximum. Then, there are quite annoying crackling background noises happening. Does this ring a bell in anybody's head ?
Thanks in advance for your ideas."

I woudl go over the solder connections on the Tridents. This sounds like a cold solder joint. I realize it has worked well for some time, but I have seen this symptom when a Trident solder joint was bad.

Try measuring the following voltages:

- Input to the DAC
- Trident 1
- Trident 2
- Trident 3

Supply should be in range 5.2v. You should have two tridents each with 3.3v and one trident with 1.2v

And post some sharp pictures of the rig.

DAC Voltage 5,25

the Tridents and AVCC Modules are fitted correctly

two Tridents 3,3 Volt, on Trident 1,179 Volt, no AC Komponents at the output

AVCC left 3,53 Volt, AVCC right 3,53 Volt

at the two outputs ( AVCC ) 60mVPP AC sawtooth 125 KHZ at the outputs

the voltages at the bottom of the DAC measured Boards

sorry is my English by google

Photo coming tomorrow

the cause of the sound errors are found!!! for if I EXAU21 module (3.3 V) move with your fingers the blue and red wire, the interference change and go away!

Why is that? Should I shield the cable? I'm so glad that I have found the Applause

Are you feeding the EXAU board from the connector at the BIII ?

Are you sure the BIII is up to the job ?

Personally I would make another 3.3v PSU exclusive for the EXAU board - and route the wires far away from the BIII.

Regarding the AVCC version 1.0 board. I you want to increase stability and possibly reduce the ripple you see at it's output, try modify with caps in these spots. The additional caps at output can be discussed. I don't believe in them but that's just me.

yes the EXA board is powered by the 3.3V I2C port of Buffalo

hmmmmmm not? Brian what can say?

yes i can make a new 3,3 Volt power supply for the EXA

yes AVCC module V-1.0, I can make my capacitors!

thanks Angel

According to data-sheet it says:

Code:

Power supply of the isolated digital output buffers.

Must be connected to the DACs digital power supply positive terminal. Accepts from 3.3V to 5V. Consumption is less then 20mA.

It should be ok to use the connector on the BIII.

Route the wires away from the Trident on the BIII.

The interference is most likely being injected into the power supply lines by the I2S lines. Keep them as far apart as possible.

I have built a new power supply (3.3 V) for the EXAU21 Board. Now the BIII runs very well over Notebook USB Angel

a problem, there are still Brick wall

SPDIF is the Lock LED on not!

here the Settings: JPCM1/2/3 open, JDSD1/2 open, Jumper J1-J12 shorting

new Firmware!! all DIP switches ON.

now what?

works through the SPDIF Lock LED does not go on! Brick wall

I have a new idea.
from the notebook using the EXA module via the sidecar on the BuffaloIII the DAC works very well! I want to take a SPDIF receiver module with the 8804 World Cup, then I have I2C output.
I2C works with the Buffalo.

My EXA module is connected:
EXA-GND-out to GNDin-Sidecar
EXA-DCK-out to BCKin-Sidecar
EXA-LR-out to D1/LRCKin-Sidecar
EXA-D.1.2-out to D2/DATAin-Sidecar

as the outputs must be connected from the 8804 receiver module to the inputs of the sidecar? ???

it works when I switch the I2C outputs from the EXA Modul/8804 receiver with relay on the sidecar? if this works I ordere a receiver module.

Greetings
Rainer
