Hi,
I'm new here and need some guidance and suggestion before deciding DAC to build, about BIII:
1. What is the advantage of dual mono configuration over single stereo? What I will loss if I build a single stereo unit? Resolution, Separation, Headroom, S/N, THD? My application for the DAC is for home studio (DAW).
2. I see that the SE version have external clock option in the board, is that an input or output?

Dual mono has two advantages:
1. It gives you slightly better performance: THD, S/N.
2. Since you have 2 of just about everything, swapping out modules is much easier: you keep swapping modules left/right, as soon as the problem jumps to the other channel you've found the module that causes the problem.
Obvious disadvantages are:
- Cost
- Amount of work
- Complexity
The external clock connector can be used for both options, as mentioned on page 6 of the guide.

Stereo is good, but dual mono is better. It's a fairly obvious improvement, but then again it costs you about twice as much. For a single module you will be able to find commercial alternatives. But for dual mono? I've not been able to find a manufacturer that uses 2 ESS chips, 8 local shunt regulators (of which 2 dual), 4 shunt pre-regulators (2 single+2 bi-polar) and fi. 4 R-core transformers. And you can propably build the dual mono DAC for less than what a really good commercial stereo DAC would cost you.

I just powered up a dual mono setup BF3SE for the first time. This is one step ahead of everything I could listenned before.
About the price, yes, this is twice a stereo setup, but there is on top of that the pleasure to decide the hardware architecture in a way usual HiFi brands will not go (so far).

I went from a single to dual mono BIII. IMO you don't get twice as good for near twice the expense but it's worthwhile. My advice, use a single output board with dual mono. There are threads here that describe what to do with single IVY and Legato in dual mono setups. Single Legato with dual mono gives me discrete out balanced, SE and headphones out. Sounds really good with my Sennheiser 650's! If playing DSD with a dual mono BIII, and I am guessing BIIISE, you'll have to use an OTTO to change input mapping or DSD will play in mono. I can't seem to link pics to this thread from my build thread so check post 71 and 75 in my build thread here in the Project Gallery. Post 71 shows the two short DAC board to Legato harnesses.
