I must be doing something wrong here.

I received a replacement firmware (labeled all versions) as we had thought that was the initial problem but still having issues with no channel separation and what seems to be a great deal of distortion. It just sounds way way better when not using the volumite.

Here's what I've done:

removed regulator, jumpered pins 1,3
removed controllers from both buffalos
jumpered PB1 to GND on volumite

how it's connected:

B1:dvcc,gnd,sda,scl
B2: gnd,sda,scl

Ideas?

Can you describe your output wiring? Volumite should in no way cause distortion.

I don't think it's actual distortion, but perceived distortion due to channel co-mingling or something to that effect. It's like everything comes out of both channels at both times all the time. It's set up with stacked IVYs. I just followed the latest dual-mono diagram with the L and R from each respective buffalo is going to the + on the output of the respective channel, and vice-versa for the -.

It sounds great when not using the volumite.

What is the reason to connect PB1 to GND? I can not find it in volumite manual.

It's supposed to put it in dual mono mode.

This I haven't done. Does it matter which one? Or perhaps both?

When I jumper the ADDR, I just get no sound at all from that channel :(

Looking at the diagram, it seems like DVCC gets jumpered to ADDRESS? Am I doing this correct by just connect the two pads under ADDR?

Yes. It is just setting a bit in the uC to high (DVCC).

I was also wondering about this DVCC/ADDRESS trace on the PCB. What if the uC is on the Volumite? Will that jumper still be required?

The address jumper is used by the DAC itself to assign its I2C address. It does not have anything do do with the controller except that it dictates what address the controller must communicate with. :)

The mono mode volumite sends the left channel instructions to the DAC with the address jumper open(low). It sends the right channel instructions to the one with it closed (high).

I think I just had one pair of cables reversed on one of the buffalos! Haven't tested it as I've decided to split up the dual mono into single stereo buffalos, but all is well!
