Greetings,

it looks like the minimac use ths stac9221 CODEC. According to the spec, pin 44 is the LR_CLK, pin 45 is SDATA (I2S out) and pin 46 is the sclk.

I was thinkink using the RJ45 plug and a cat6 cable to transport the 3 lines. So first, does that makes sens? and second where I connect the 3 lines on the buffalo32 board?

You have only specified two of the required three signals. The other is the bit clock.

If you can find it then you would connect it like any other I2S source, but you will need to be sure that the bit clock is 64fs.

Bit clock -> DCK
Word Clock(LRCK) -> D1
SDATA -> D2

Ahh I missed that!

Sorry. Yes most likely it is. IF it is, and it is at 64fs rate then you are in business as long as those signals are TTL level.

Russ,

there is a master clock on the ESS sabre, so I guess we don't need the bit clock here, but just the word clock and the sdata, right?

Well, without beeing an expert, I tend to disagree on this one.Usually, the master clock has an higher rate than the bit clock.
Actually, another guy from diyaudio (NeoY2ks )that has build also a DAC around the ESS sabre 9018 told me this DAC does'nt need a SCLK to work but just the SDATA and LRClock lines....
So may be I gave a wrong assomption here, but could you develop on that?

edit: here is what I found on the net :

«The new ESS Sabre DAC seems to use a novel approach. This is a DAC which
runs on its own clock (low jitter) and it accepts digital audio data in
SPDIF or I2S with an asynchronous clock (high jitter).
It is a multibit sigma-delta DAC so the input is highly oversampled
(don't remember how much) using polyphase filters, then the asynchronous
resampling is done on the highly oversampled data which allows use of a
very simple interpolation algorithm.
This is very clever (and patented).

It is a good example of lateral thought. Instead of solving a hard
problem (asynchronous resampling at frequencies close to the Nyquist
limit) it turns it into an easy problem (asynchronous resampling with a
sample frequency way above the Nyquist limit).

The chip incorporates lots of other extremely clever tricks.
It has been reported as potentially the best sounding chip ever by most
of those who tried to implement it.»

To the best of my knowledge, it requires Data, Bit Clock and Work Clock, but not Master clock.

Brian is correct.

The master clock(80Mhz) is on the board already but you still need to supply the bitclock. :)

You need to supply bit clock/word clock/data.
