Are there any plans on making some kind of display interface for the Buffalo DACs? Would be great to be able to see what format, bit-rate and sample frequency is being used for example.

I am also investigating the possibility of using a display with buffalo.
I am using a microcontroller to communicate through I2C with the DAC
but it seems that there is no obvious register to keep this kind of info.
The chip used in MUX board could provide the info but I think the board
lacks the I2C output.

Good news, the Buffalo32 has a status register which can be read and from which the current input sample frequency can be calculated.

Now doing something with that will require some firmware. :)

The I2C interface works in both directions, it can be read from and written to. :)

Would it be appropriate to start a collaborative project based on a common open platform such as arduino or equivalent? I know this would be in direct competition with that TPA plans on doing, but the amount of open source libraries, development platforms and low cost hardware will allow this project to move fairly fast.

We plan on using the AC1/Femto platform for just such an application. The Femto is easily flashed via it's USB(A) jack, so anyone who wished can write custom firmware.

There is software for IR remote handling: http://www.arduino.cc/cg...YaBB.pl?num=1210243556/0 , http://www.rtfa.net/2008...ra-red-ir-remote-control , software for rotary encoders: http://www.arduino.cc/pl...ound/Main/RotaryEncoders , etc. With an "open platform" the audio community can leverage the hardware and software advances of the robotics community.
