I have had a question in the back of my mind for some time now regarding power supply to the dac and IV stage. I am wondering wich parts to omit on the lcdps and lcbps in order to use them with fixed output regulators as a drop in replacement for the 317/337. Several "super-regulators" out there with 317/337 pinout should fit but I am not certain if it only require a jumper to replace the trimpot or if there are other parts in the circuit that needs to be removed?

Have never tried it, best to ask the designer of the other regulator. :)

I did send a mail to super@belleson.com

Quote:
Good day,
I have been looking at your superregulators and have desided to use
them in my DAC (Twisted Pear Audio B2 with Ivy3 IV stage and VentuzEz
headphone amp).
ATM I am using a Twisted Pear Audio LCBPS and LCDPS to power it. What
I am wondering is wich parts I need to remove from the circuits in
order to use your regulators?
The Schematics are attached. If you could have a look at it and tell
me what parts to omit and where to place jumpers I would very much
appreciate it.

Best regards
Gunnar Wikse

And here is the reply in case others are wondering about the same thing:

Quote:

Hi Gunnar,

Thanks for your interest in Belleson regulators, how did you learn about us?

To use Superpower in this circuit, first with circuit under power measure

1. voltage between DC_OUT.3 and DC_OUT.2 (call this Voutpos)

2. voltage between DC_OUT.1 and DC_OUT.2 (call this Voutneg)

3. voltage across R1 (call this Vr1) (probably low voltage, maybe less than 1V)

4. voltage across R2 (call this Vr2) (also low voltage)

5. voltage between node 1 of R1 and DC_OUT.2 (call this Vinpos)

6. voltage between node 1 of R2 and DC_OUT.2 (call this Vinneg)

With circuit power off, measure

7. resistance of R1 (Rr1) (probably a low resistance, maybe less than 1 Ohm)

8. resistance of R2 (Rr2) (also low resistance)

Use R1 and R2 voltage and resistance measurements to calculate full load current of the regulators as
Ipos = Vr1 / Rr1
Ineg = Vr2 / Rr2

and regulator power dissipation as
PDpos = (Vinpos - Voutpos) x Ipos
PDneg = (Vinneg - Voutneg) x Ineg

If Ipos is below 500mA and PDpos is below 1W, for IC1 you can use SP17. If either is higher, use SPJ17. Same with negative regulator IC2, except order SP79 or SPJ79. Order with output voltages of Voutpos and Voutneg.

Once you get the Superpowers, remove R5 and R6, place jumpers from the ADJ pins to the DC_OUT.2 wire (this may be a ground plane) and jumpers across R1 and R2:

It appears IC1 and IC2 have a heat sink, so the Superpowers should also be heat sinked. For SPJ17 and SPJ79, a TO-218 heat sink like Aavid-Thermalloy 529901B02500G may fit better than a TO-220 heat sink.

This is a lot of information, please contact me with further questions.

Best regards,

Brian Lowe

My Buffalo 3se is now up and running using Belleson superregulators.

I followed the instructions given by Belleson. In addition I omitted C7 and C8 as they would be shorted to gnd if mounted.
To get the gnd connected instead of the adj pin, I omitted the VR1 and VR2 and placed a jumper between the center leg and the one closest to the regulator.

My supplies are now:
LCDPS with custom fixed output 5,25V 2A regulator on one side. The other side of the LCDPS is normal with a 317 and adjusted to 7,5V to the DAC controller (CE-designs 644 controller).
LCBPS with +15V and -15V fixed regulators.

The 5,25V regulator is powering:
1 Buffalo 3se
2 optical modules
1 Teleporter
1 Otto 2

The +-15 is powering
1 Ivy3

Working well so far. The custom has been running 24/7 for a few weeks (I had to flip the supply up side down, use 38,1mm standoffs instead of the normal that came with the kit and put thermal paste between the heatsinks (original TPA) and the chassis in order for it to run cool enough for my taste). The +-15V have been running for about 3 hrs. Will report back if I experience any issues. Most likely I will flip that one around as well, but for now I want to see how hot the 0,5A regs get.

These have been running 24/7 since the last post. No issues.

I recently swapped my Ivy3 for a Legato 3.1.
The +-15V 500mA regulators also seem to handle this with no issue.
