+4dBu "Pro" Line Level
-10 dBV "Consumer" Line Level.

While doing a side by side audio comparison between a Avid HD I/O 16x16 Digital Pro
Audio Interface and the TP Buffalo IIISe we noticed the output level of the B3 SE was
Quite low and not at Pro Audio Line level and we had to pull the Avid Pro Audio Interface
Level down -11.7 db to and max out the B3 SE to push it to O db on the meters.

0 db would generally be +4dBu "Pro" Line Level but using the B3se it’s actually below
-10 dBV "Consumer" Line Level at 0db, which is weird as I would assume the B3se to be a Pro Audio DAC.

My question is, what is the Output Line Level of the Buffalo IIISe it doesn’t seem to be
Pro Line Level or Consumer Line Level?

Is there a Limiter on the Built in digital volume control level? Can this be raised?

Output Stage is the IVY-III

The IVY-III by default is right around ~2VRMS at 0dbfs

The IVY-III manual describes how to increase the output if you desire to.

Cheers!

So what your saying is ((2VRMS)) should be above +4 dBu

2VRMS coverts to: 8.239087412 dBu or 6.020599913 dBV

Pro Studio Recording Gear using +4 dBu standard is around 1.228 volts.

What other possibilities may be holding the volume down to such a low audible level?

Unless you mean it's .2VRMS

Which converts to around -11.7609125 dBu or -13.9794000 dBV

Hey Russ,

What also confuses me is, in the manual it say: "The kit includes resistors for 2VRMs(industry standard consumer level)"

2VRMs is clearly not Consumer Level its above Professional audio

Hey Russ,

Take a look at the 1K TEST TONE running at 0db picture below.

Have you tried measuring at the DAC output with no I/V stage? There the output will be just under 2VRMS (balanced).

Remember you must measure differentially. Not sure how well a DMM is suited to that task.

In any case. If you want more output you know how to get it. Just adjust proportionally to the output you are trying to obtain.

Cheers!
Russ

Hello Russ,

I haven't measured at the DAC output yet. I did measure at the Ventus EZ which is after the IVYIII, it had a reading of 1.29

As I mentioned I'm not looking for more that +4 or 1.228 volts.
I just have to have Pro Studio output level or I can't use this unit in a Studio environment with out adjustments every time we A to B system playbacks.

Hello Russ,

I Just measured the DAC by it's self and I'm getting a 1.6vrms L & R.

So it appears the IVYIII is some how damping the signal, what should I check or what would cause this to happen?

Thanks in advance..

RUSS - Can I completely remove the IVY output stage and go direct to Powered Monitors?

Sure you can, but SQ will be substantially worse.

It is possible the IVY-III is not configured correctly. I would just change the gain of the second stage to match your needs. It is very easy.

Hey Russ

I tested the BIII SE Direct the sound level doubled and I didn't notice any weird sound artifacts or lose in quality however, I would like to get the Output Stage in the picture to do an A/B comparison.

Russ Comment: change the gain of the second stage

?? When you say CHANGE, are you referring to the: Blue – Second stage gain resistors

Picture of the Full assembled IVYIII below.

Are you using both balanced and SE outputs, or only bal or only SE?

Only the Balanced Outs -
I'm feeding The XLR outputs and The Ventus EZ

CC1 was removed on the Ventus EZ's

Ok so what I would suggest is you adjust the IVY-III balanced output by increasing R13-R16. Start with 357R. Those four resistors need to be well matched to each other. That value will get you nearly double the output swing. Adjust as necessary.

OK I can try that. Is there a specific replacement part you recommend?
I didn't see a 357R .25W 0.1% Precision Metal Film made by Yageo at digikey or mouser.

It is also perfectly fine to use 1% as long as you hand match them to each other.

I usually order a couple hundred and hand match.

So this is what I found, will it suffice? MFR-25FRF-52-357R at Digikey

Hey Brian,

Thank you,

I saw that one yesterday from LeonvB post and I saw Russ post today, so now I'm confused ... If I need or should buy a couple hundred to get matched pairs. the price of the mouser 0.1% is $199 for 200 and the digikey 1% is $6.14 for 250. buying the digikey version seems like a no brain but tell if or why I'm wrong
