How do I go about switching the sidecar from using the 4 SPDIF input to the I2S input?

Thanks

You have to power up the relay on the Sidecar and disable the S/PDIF autodetect. Check out page 16 of Leon's Integration Guide.

O.K. I was not able to sleep tonight anyway so I thought I would give the switch a try. I connected the switch as stipulated, pole 1 ground to pin 14 and pole 2 5v to B. Still no music. I have upload Lucians driver. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you already tested the WaveIO without the Sidecar?
Is SW2:5 set to OFF to allow control by an external switch?

No I have not tested the WaveIO without the sidecar, what would be the best way to do that?

Yes I did turn sw2 5 off. Still no sound.

Thank you

Problems like these are an exercise in elimination. Work your way from one module to another, to find out where in the chain you have a problem.

Questions to be answered:
1. You claim no music. Does S/PDIF still work with the Sidecar inbetween the S/PDIF module and the B3? If it does, you know at least the signal is going from input to B3 OK, so the S/PDIF module, sidecar and B3 should work on a very basic level. At least most of your wiring and modules work. It also proves the power supplies are working fine.
2. If you do have music through S/PDIF, does it stop when you switch over? This would likely indicate a fault in the wiring to the WaveIO, the Wave IO itself or the PSU for the WaveIO (if you use one).
3. If S/PDIF does not work, do you have music with the Sidecar not between the S/PDIF module and the B3? This would indicate a problem in the Sidecar or the wiring of the Sidecar to the B3.
etc.

You simply keep eliminating parts of the whole chain until you find the part that is causing the fault. Keep in mind adding or removing parts will change your power usage: the current may need adjustment.

How do I do a direct wiring to Buffalo with the Wave? Would I do it via page 19 of the previous manual?

See the chapter "Connecting sources directly to the Buffalo III DAC board", p11 in the current version.

OK that is the same as what I refered to.

Last question, when trying to do things through the sidecar the lock led was on when I would switch to the Wave, does that give any information to you or not really.

Thanks for all the info LeonvB, much appreciated.

In that case the DAC does seem to recognize a signal, at least it locks on to something. Meaning WaveIO, Sidecar and B3 do have some kind of connection.
Did you ever had your setup working, fi. with just the S/PDIF module? If not, the problem might be volume control or the I/V stage.

Note: in any case it might be a good idea to post a few pictures.

I will try to attach pics to this post.
Yes I have had the setup running without usb input for a while.
Another thing I noticed is I do not hear the relays when switching to the usb, only when switching back to spdif.

It might be the board to board connector on the Sidecar: it seems little solder is used on that part. Also did you remember to strip the ground from those uFL coax cables?

Looking at the solder joints things look good here, yes I removed the ground from the coax. So does this just leave me with having to try a direct wiring? Any chance that the Otto II would remove the issue? I hate to just have usb as the only input.

Direct wiring certainly would be something to try. Otto II won't join the inputs as required. USB only would only be a test: it would tell you the WaveIO and B3 work together. After that, adding the Sidecar and S/PDIF module are next on the list.

In your picture were do you get the ground? I have a waveio-Buffalo 3 and i solder u.fl receptacles in the sidecar(not the molex connector block) and use factory 5 cm uncut u.fl cables. The ground of the receptacles in sidecar side are all connected to sidecar ground. That's the advice of some in diy audio waveio thread.

I connected the ground from WaveIO to the sidecar ground. Someone had done it that way and I just followed what they did. It is working though I am not sure if it might be better if done the way you did it. Any thoughts?

Hi mjock3
Well i think it avoid's more wires hanging around and a shorter way on the ground connections, maybe less prone to ground loops. The screen of u.fl cables is connected to ground in both ends, some reclaim better isolation. Have this setting for 2 months and very happy with it in a controversial server-player setting with mpdpup (linux puppy repro, free of course and easy to use by newbies), with a great sound. IMHO. All my locking problems with Buffalo 3 were solved by planning shorter paths and making it as simple as possible. To solder U.fl receptacles i think its better to have optical magnifier gear, i use 3 x.
Regards
