Placid outputs 5.5V unconnected. When connected to the Buffalo II, voltage drops to 0.009V (measured at Buffalo II inputs). It worked fine yesterday. What could be the trouble?

Sounds like a short - could be a dead regulator.

Yes, I tested with another Placid and Buffalo II board. The fault is on the Buffalo II board.

OK. Any way to tell which? These are the 8-pin parts labelled 176333/1763? I think I could probably replace one if need be. I have a spare Placid available if that will be useful for diagnosis.

Time to buy Tridents?

I assume that will be the easiest solution.

Have you checked if the on board regulators are working OK?

Pretty sure that at least one has failed. I'm just waiting for some Tridents which should solve the issue and improve the sound at the same time.

Don't forget to desolder the ferrite beads.

Thanks felipe. Already done :)
I have also reduced my Placid voltage and increased the current as advised.
