Is it possible to connect the I2S output (as shown below) directly from a Philips CDPro2LF transport to the Buffalo ?

Yes and no. The connections are correct, but the CDPro only outputs 48fs data, and the Buffalo requires 64fs. You can either use a Metronome (or other upsampler) to achieve this, or simply use the CDPro's S/PDIF outputs, which is what I would recommend for simplicity.

1) (CD Pro2LF via I2S) >>> Metronome >>> Buffalo
or
2) (CD Pro2LF via SPDIF) >>> Buffalo

According to Dustin at ESS, there should be no difference in sound quality, despite what other are saying on various forums. I cannot hear a difference, and I choose to trust the chip designer (call me crazy).

I have all but completed my CDPRO2 - Metronome - Buffalo combo, cant wait to test the spdif/I2S back to back. So I need the switch settings for 64fs on the Metronome. Texas replied "You don't need any settings for system clock frequency selection, it is automatically detected by internal clock manager circuit. Either of 128/192/256/384/512/768fs detection is based on LRCK clock as fundamental sampling rate, fs. If the output port is being operated in Master mode, the BCK is fixed at a 64Fs rate, where Fs = the output sampling rate." For I2S output on the metronome the bit clock is already fixed at 64fs. So you don't need to do anything for that. Just set the Metronome input 24-bit I2S and to output 24-bit I2S at 512fs, 256fs, or 128fs (48khz,96khz,192khz respectively) per the manual and wire bit clock, word clock, and data to the Buffalo. Well, I don't really know. Try both and see what you like. :)
What I do know is that once the I2S is received the DAC will upsample it to about 2mhz. :)

Have tried the back to back,I2S against SPDIF. First test was the CDPRO2 with Tent reclocked Spdif,very difficult on HD650s but on my full system the only difference i could detect was the sound of the "room" in the recordings. I2S seems to convey more minutae of sound decays and the illusion of space in the venue or studio. Swapping to a Pioneer PD506 ( an oldie but goody with upsidedown transport) this Spdif had no detail at all in comparison, as did a Shanling CDT200. So - appears the old story about source quality dictating the end result still applies, the top notch transport with clean Spdif is very very good, but even the clever Sabre cannot reconstruct good sound from a substandard digital stream. Played around with the Metronome sampling and cant hear any difference at all between 96 or 192 Edited by user Monday, October 27, 2008 6:31:33 PM(UTC)

As I know, the "24bit I2S" means "48fs data" (64fs = 32bit) am I right? My original plan was using my buffalo with my CDPro2LF i2s signal directly...
