Ok, I'm working on building a custom CarPC and setup in my car. I've been trying to figure out how to get a high quality DAC setup for my audio. The problem I'm having is trying to figure out how to get 4 channel output as well as a sub channel? The front end software I'll be using doesn't seem to have any settings for select specific output devices or ports for specific speakers? Is there a way I can do this in windows? I'd need to set one channel to SUB for sure otherwise I may not get any audio output on my sub channel at all? Trying to figure out how to do this.

To clarify, this would have to be through SPDIF I guess? Can the buffalo do 8 channel SPDIF? I was a bit confused by that part of the manual. Can you extract I2s from a sound card or something? Maybe I'm just crazy for even thinking about this.

No and no, as SPDIF is stereo only. TTL level PCM or DSD are the only methods for multi-channel sound. And yes: one can extract I2S from a soundcard. Some even have their interface on an expansion header.

Hmm, well then maybe it is possible off the soundcard then.

Ok, do you know of a thread with an example on getting I2S off a sound card? I need to figure out what the best sound card to get for this and what not. I'm going to look through some of these threads as well.

Nice! So the Asus Xonar makes it quite easy for us! That's great news! I have new hope now :)

The ExaU2I would be perfect, but it's 400 bucks.

See page 4 of the datasheet and then read the guide for the B3, chapter "Connecting sources directly to the DAC board". It's all there.

Ok I think I figured out WHICH points I'd need to tap, the question I have now though is if just the 4 wires will do all 8 channels? or do I need to get more?
According to the manual "Note: If not using Sidecar but using stereo PCM D2-D5 should be joined via the PCM jumpers.". Does that mean in a multi-channel setup D2-D5 would all have a connection for each speaker?

You need all 7 wires for 8 channel. You want multi-channel, not stereo. So that line does not apply to you.
A warning: this will not be a cheap nor a small project. I would suggest reading the BOM at the end of the manual and making a quick shopping list. If you think a Xonar is expensive: it will get worse.

Oh I know how much the DAC will cost, just didn't want to spend that much just to get I2s out of the pc. I built a dual mono opus previously.

Do you have to use IVY stages with the B3? I'm not entirely sure what an IVY stage is for but reading over the manual it says for multichannel you need 4 of them? I don't need 8 channels I just need 5 so would I need 4? In fact I'm thinking of making just 4 channels, if I could use 3 outputs on the L/R channels and 2 outputs on the sub channel I think I may go that route and maybe use one of my Opus modules for the rear or something possibly. If it's possible to setup the outputs this way anyways.

No, you could also use Legato stages. For every 2 channels you need one. For 5 you would need 3 of them (and 6 I2S wires).

So if I were going to do 3 channels I only need 2 and 4 i2s wires.

No, you would need 2 I/V stages and 5 wires. For I2S you have GND, DCK and D1 as basic wires, plus 1 data wire for each 2 channels.

Oh ok that makes sense. I think the rear channels I'd just run off the sound card cause they don't get used much anyways.
