I'd like to use 4 Opus DACs in stereo mode with my CV-505 7.1 HDMI Receiver/Decoder to get balanced outputs (for monitor speakers) and better quality DACs. In order to get a master volume control I was wondering if the Volumite can take control of multiple Opus DACs.

With custom firmware you can control up to two OPUS since the WM8741 can only have two separate I2C addresses.

Sure, you can do that if you want them all to have the same master volume. Just run the same I2C signal (from the Volumite) to all four DACs and use the same address. You could then adjust individual channels using your receiver. If you want to control channels independently than you would want to use something like the AC1/Femto and SPI to control the DACs. Looking at the product it look you you should be able to tap the PCM/DSD lines internally. :) That could be very very sweet. :)
There is only one SPDIF output, so you could only do stereo with that.

Thank you for the quick answer. It is a bit diffucult to work out how the Volumite works with the Opus DAC only from the schematic and the layout. But from your answer I assume that the Volumite uses 2-wire serial control mode (p21 of the WM8741 data sheet) and not the 3-wire mode that would allow daisy chaining of more than two WM8741s (p19f of the data sheet). Edit: (just read Russ' answer) I'm planning to wire the I2S outputs from the decoder to the Opus DACs. The individual channel volumes will be set at the active speakers, I only need a master volume. This is great news for me Russ, I will place my order soon. Cheers Thurs Edited by user Friday, May 29, 2009 12:47:41 PM(UTC)

The opus can use either the 3 wire or 2 wire. And the Volumite can actually support either, but would need a little tweak to get it to work with 3 wire because the standard firmware uses I2C(2 wire). Its an easy change in the firmware for me to make.
So what I would do is try it as is with the 2 wire. It should work fine(but honestly I have not had need to try it).
If it seems to have any issues let me know, and I will send you firmware to do with the 3 wire protocol. Which I am quite sure will work very well.

Thank you verry much Russ I've placed the order. Now I'm looking forward to the release of the Auzentech HDMI Audio Card to get at least some True HD signal out of my HTPC. I will let you know when my DIY Receiver works, and if it doesn't I'll contact you anyway ;).
