Instead of constructing a separate DAC, has anyone use these boards and physically replace the DAC in your SACD player. Will it be easy to get this done ?

Yes I have done it with Denon players. It is not simple, but not extremely difficult either. It does require that you do some very fine solder work.

The DSD input of the Buffalo makes it not very difficult once you find and can tap into the DSD signals.

Cheers!

Hi Russ,
I've been reading up on your Denon DSD mod both here as well as at diyaudio.com. I have a few questions and was hoping this would be the right place to ask. I am planning on getting a Denon DV-D19x0 and mod it so that I can use it with a Buffalo32 DAC for SACD. Now, if I need to use the same player to output the digits from the CD as well as the DVD-A stream, what other modifications would I need. Ideally I'd like to have a single digital transport for CD, SACD as well as DVD-A feeding into a Buffalo DAC. I'm sorry if this question has already been answered but I couldn't figure it out. Thanks.
Cheers!

you most likely need some kind of switch between the DSD and PCM signals. I have only tried to take the DSD signal because I couldn't really figure out how to switch inside the player. I think Russ or Brian contemplated making the OTTO switch using the SACD led inside the player, but never made it work. I have studied the service manual, but I cant make out how to do it. I'm happy with just the DSD, but DVD-A would be nice.

Hi Majestic,
Thanks for the reply. If I do mod my Denon to put out DSD, would it mean I'd need another transport for playing redbook CD's as well? I really wish I could be able to listen atleast to SACDs and CDs from the same transport...

No. At worst you will have to install a switch like the OTTO installed together with the Buffalo to select what input is connected. This could select DSD/I2S or DSD/SPDIF depending on how you set it up and if you plan to use the MUX.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the reply, I think I'd have to read up a bit more on the Otto as well as the Buff32 and see if it all makes sense. Thanks again for your answer.

What I did was tap the PCM and DSD signals at the DAC on the Denon board. I then wired an OTTO with a manual external switch.

I was hoping to make the process automatic, but I did not have any luck finding the signal that indicates that an SACD is playing.

In any case its very simple to flip the switch when changing between CDs/DVDA and SACD.

Cheers!

Russ,
Where did you tap the PCM from? I thought that location where to get had not been located.
Thanks,
Nic

Where did you tap the power for the OTTO from?

Also, if you need it, I have the service manual for the DVD-1920. I cant make out where to tap the SACD led, but maybe you can.

Used the same supply as VD for the Buff. :)

You can email it to me if you like. :)

Thanks!

ah yeah, I forgot you had the whole DAC inside. An idea where to tap it from the Denon supply?

I'll drop you an email with the manual.

Thanks for the input Russ. So it does look like it'd be possible to have a single transport for all 3 formats, albeit at the flick of a switch! Can I install the Otto on the DAC instead of the Denon? Also, from what I understand, I'd need an Otto and an SPDIF MUX units with the Buff32 board, right? Thanks for all the inputs guys, makes much more sense to me now.

I would just look around with your DMM for likely supply tapping point.

Why would you need the SPDIF MUX? :)

If you just playing from the Denon player, just use the PCM.

I was thinking if I needed to connect a HTPC as well as a digital radio receiver, I'd need a MUX. In my understanding, the Otto would just switch between the DSD and PCM streams for the Denon, did I get it wrong? d'oh!

Fast question:
Will PCM/DSD signal survive 1-2 m of Cat5/6 cable?
Thanks,
Nic

If you are going to use the mux, then you would need an additional OTTO in the DAC to switch between the input from the Denon and the mux.
