Hi,
I have a basic setup (below) and I use the Buffalo digital volume control instead of my old pre-amp but I seem to have too much gain in my system because I can only turn the volume up a tiny bit before it is way too loud.
- Buffalo DAC
- IVY line stage with SE outputs
- Peter Daniel design LM3875 non-inverting Gainclone amp
- Speakers with about 88 dB average efficiency
Question:
Where would it be best to reduce gain in my system:
- IVY line stage?
- IVY SE-stage?
- Gainclone amp?
I would very much like to use the available dynamics and the volume control better. Any ideas and thoughts would be much appreciated before I dive in.

I would reduce the gain at the amplifier.
For best signal quality, it is generally better to maintain higher input levels and limit late stage gain.

Thanks Brian! I will start by adjusting the gain of the gainclone amp. Btw: Did an experiment with passive 20 dB attenuators between the IVY (SE output) and the power amp. The volume control range and listening level was about what I was looking for but the perceived "sound quality" was absolutely terrible.
