Have just built a Cronus-Hermes-Amanero dual mono BIIISE setup with sync master clock but the sound is all distorted and the lock is unreliable.

switching to SPDIF input works flawlessly once I swap the crystals on the Cronus around so I'm guessing the problem lies in the Amanero/Hermes or the reclocking component of the Cronus. Setting the DPLL switches from Auto to highest (as recommended by Russ for sync MCLK) makes it worse.

Any assistance would be appreciated otherwise I'll have to give up on synchronous clocking and go back to my usual DIYINHK USB solution

Happy NY!

No luck in solving this issue so unfortunately the Amanero/Hermes/Cronus is now consigned to the rubbish bin :-(

You should try getting it working ASYNC first, as it is much easier to configure.

Connect it up leaving out the MCK connection from the Cronus to the DAC and leave the 100MHz DAC XO powered and see if that works first.

Thanks for the reply Brian.

Sound advice doing ASYNC first, but I was doing a build for my Dad's 80th and was time limited - complicated by a dual mono build, as I had devised a stackable header arrangement for the 2 B3SEs input, MCLK, and I2C connections which also meant directly soldering the tridents onto the lower B3SE because of height limitations

I simply ran out of time to diagnose/rework it. The DIYINHK USB worked perfectly ASYNC and the whole shebang sounds wonderful as always (this is my 8th Buffalo build and 2nd dual mono). Will post piccies of the build.

Have bought the Amanero/Cronus back with me and now have an opportunity to test it ASYNC

Cheers,

Poss

PS: Why is it much easier to configure ASYNC?

It's easier simply because you are working with fewer things to consider.

Running the DAC async si a "known quantity" so you are isolating troubleshooting to the Hermes/Cronus section. Once that is working, you add in the other new part (external MCK for the DAC) and get that part working.
