Hi guys

I'm currently converting my buffalo iii into a dual mono.

Would it matter if I have a v1.0.2 and a v1.0.1?

No worries feckie. I have different BIII board revisions and it still works and sounds great! I had asked Russ a couple years back and he said no worries. In the second post of the thread linked below I had posted the info to someone that asked.

My Best! Congrats on your build! Are you going to stay with one output board? IMO one is the way to go, but there are some things to properly configure if you do use one output board. I had first built mine with two output boards but converted to one.

Rich

IF you go with one output board, this thread has links and info about what to do. Legato and IVY III had different solutions.

Thanks for the help buddy.

Im using a single output. Dual monos tend take up a fair bit of real estate and having one less placid hd bp + transformer is helpful!

In total there will be 4 spdif and 1 usb. To keep things simple i am thinking of using 1 switch to switch between i2s and spdif and another switch to select between the spdifs. Cumbersome but I cant seem to get my head around using 1 switch to do it all.

im a fair bit into the build now, i have some questions. Some of those will no doubt be in the build guide but it never hurts to ask in my opinion.... As long as you read the build guide first :)

No worries, happy to help.

I hear you on the real estate. Since I started with dual output boards, I retained the extra PS and powered the left channel with one and the right and center of board with the other.

I mounted my toroidals vertical on a thick aluminum angle but stacking is OK, seen it done before. You can use a mechanical switch to control the Sidecar. Are you going to use the TP 4-Input Selection Switch Kit to control the 4 channel SPDIF input board?

Do you have the early or later version 4 channel input board? The early ones were switching sensitive to five volts power off the DAC board while the later version is not. I have both, the early board had to be dropped to 4.5V input voltage to work properly. As I recall not everyone had that issue with the early input boards.

Are you going to play DSD through your DAC? If so, DSD will play in mono due to internal DAC chip mapping when run in dual mono. Russ had posted an alternative input mapping using an OTTO 2 with DSD. I corrected mine using signal relays and a mechanical switch on back of DAC.

I see you are stacking the DAC boards? Remember with dual mono, the R & L channel polarities are reversed when connected on each DAC board before connecting to individual channels on the output board. Might be easier to rearrange and mount DAC boards on each side of output board.

Hi SCompRacer

Mate.. Lot of good info there!

Yes, I will be using the TP switch kit.

As for the version of the 4ch input board it is V1.2, hopefully its the ok version.

I might still give stacking a try, space might be a problem otherwise.

The DSD looks like it will be an issue, wasnt expecting that. Luckily enough i happen to have a Otto 2 which i purchased just in case.

I am however having troubles understanding how it works and how to wire it. For example would it go waveio -> otto -> sidecar? I found a few threads but i cant seem to get my head around it.

I guess you could say I paid some dues...lol As long as you are aware of the dual mono wiring and wire accordingly, you can stack them. ;)

Here is the thread where Russ posted his fix to the DSD mapping thing using an OTTO II.

http://www.twistedpearau...ono-configuration.aspx?=

I couldn't see how to apply the OTTO fix with my configuration so I did it another way, with signal relays between Sidecar and L and R DAC boards. I have USB input, 4 channel SPDIF input board and Teleporter input from my Denon 3910 that outputs I2S and DSD. I use an OTTO II in Denon to switch mapping of DSD. The R and L channel of DSD share I2S data lines but channels get reversed, OTTO corrects that and feeds the DAC with proper polarity.

I use OTTO to switch between USB and Denon 3910 inputs, and Sidecar to switch between OTTO and 4 channel input board. Post 74. OTTO would work with less inputs, but I needed a swiss knife DAC. And the relays don't hurt SQ one bit.

http://www.twistedpearau...enon-DVD-3910-Mod.aspx?=

I'm fairly sure the version 1.2 board is the newer one; it was the 1.1 boards that could have the issue. I'll have to look when I get home.

Thanks Rich

I have changed the layout a bit as the stacking of the dac's meant that i had a height problem.

I was going to use 3 pin connectors to join the dacs to the ivy but i have changed my mind. Rather than desolder the 3 pin terminals from the DAC i was wondering if i could use the other output headers instead.

Or are these deactivated when not required.
