In looking for a multichannel DAC I came across your site. I would like to build a DAC that will take advantage of the digital crossover and DSD capabilities of JRiver. I would like to a output three (or 4) channels via USB (L,R, Sub 1 or 2 channels) to a DAC with three (4) outputs.

All my research indicates if I use two DACs the clocks must be syncronised. The other solution is to use a multichanel DAC.

Can the 8 channel Buffalo III be configured to this type of operation? If so will I need anything in addition to the kit on the website.

Or would you reccomend two stero DACs in sync. I saw on a slightly related post information that suggests that you two channel DACs can be syncronised. True? If so what would be required for this application.

My ultimate preference is sound quality. The DAC would require only one Input.

Also how does the 8 channel DAC show up in the Sound Panel in Windows?

Please forgive me if this topic has been discussed already in the forums. If so can you please send me links to forum postings that might help answer these questions.

Thank You,

Steve

What will you be using for a multichannel USB source?

I have a dedicated PC running windows 8.1. I use Jriver 20 as my music app. Jriver has a custom crossover option which I would like to use in order to take my miniDSP out of my system and get rid of the A/D ->D/A conversion.

I do not have to go the USB route but currently its the only output my PC has. I could of course get a card that support an optical out.

I think there is a missing bit of information here.

Between the computer and the DAC, you need something that will generate I2S (or DSD) data for the DAC input. Typically, this is a USB device that can output I2S.

The DAC itself does not connect directly yo the computer.

Ah yes understood. I was thinking I would use the usb unit offered by TP into the 8-channel DAC.

I have read the implementation paperwork for the 8 channel dac and it appears it can be run in 4- channel mode. I guess my real question is will JRivers built in DSP software be configured to recognise all 4 channels so I can assign crossover curves to each one?
