To prepare BIII boards for dual mono you can follow the procedure on pages 19 + 21. Left/right is described in step 1 on page 21.

just update to dual mono, my setting is that, the left channel r7 and addr not shorted, L5 is mounted, and right channel r7, L5 and addr are shorted,
left and right dip swithc setting

For DIP switch block SW1:
1 ON Quantizer setting (combined: 1 with 2)
2 ON Quantizer setting (combined: 1 with 2)
3 ON Differential mode True Pseudo
4 OFF FIR roll off mode Fast Slow
5 ON DPLL bandwidth (combined: 5 to 7)
6 OFF DPLL bandwidth (combined: 5 to 7)
7 OFF DPLL bandwidth (combined: 5 to 7)
8 OFF DPLL bandwidth multiplier 1x 128x

For DIP switch block SW2:
1 OFF S/PDIF input selection (combined: 1 with 2)
2 OFF S/PDIF input selection (combined: 1 with 2)
3 OFF Normal/Dual mono selection Normal Dual mono
4 OFF Oversampling filter and reclocking Use Bypass
5 OFF S/PDIF auto-detect Use Bypass
6 ON IIR Bandwidth (combined: 6 with 7)
7 ON IIR Bandwidth (combined: 6 with 7)
8 Input remapping Normal Remap

but the result is left and right speaker can play left and right music at same channel, ie left right speaker test, left channel that i can listen left and right channel at the same speaker.
anything wrong i did?

L5 shorted? That's not in the guide. It says: Put a jumper on R7 or remove L5.
Did you remove the firmware chip (IC8) from the right board?
Did you connect the I2C headers as described?
Right board switches don't do anything, please re-read page 21.
Plus I would suggest starting out with the default switch settings, and make sure you have the latest firmware.

o, sorry, make a mistack, both left and right L5 not removed.

the dip switch setting left and right are the same, and connect i2c without 3.3v, only left board have firmware chip,

I am at work right now, but will try to take a closer look later on today.

The one thing that strikes me is the changes you made for an external clock. It would have been far easier to not install the VDD_XO Trident on each board and leave the original XO in place. You could then connect your remote clock to the two-pin header next to the XO. As you have it, the VDD_XO Trident is not doing anything.

I don't think this is causing your issue, but I want to point it out so that others attempting to do this don't do the same thing.

Generally speaking, using the Buffalo-IIIse is easier for dual-mono setups.

R7 is a red herring. Adding it changes the I2C address of the PortExpander chip, which is not used in dual-mono anyway, so there is no need to jumper it. It is there in case someone has custom firmware that would make use of the second set of DIP switches, which is not the case here.

L5 provides power to the onboard voltage regulator that feeds the firmware chip and port expander. If you remove the firmware chip, there is no need to alter L5... you can always leave it mounted with no ill effects. Removing it from the no-firmware board does not hurt, it's just not needed.

The only thing you need to add for jumpers is the ADDR jumper to tell the firmware which board is left/right.

just tried, removed the right board r7, addr shorted, all dip switch on ON mode, the left board addr not shorted, same dip switch setting as before, sw2:3 on dual mono mode, the result same as before, left board left and right channel play "left and right voice" at the left and right speaker.

Sorry for a Newbie question. I am planning for the dual mono Buffalo IIISe.

Questions:
1) What do you mean ‘put a jumper on the address header (ADDR,2)’ ? Do you mean shorting the ADDR ?

2) What do you mean ‘make sure L5(L5,20) is mounted’ ? Do you mean shorting L5 ? Is L5 mounted as default?

3) What do you mean by Connect left and right boards by using I2C header ? Do you mean connect the SLA of the left board to the SLA of the right board ? The same for the SLC and GND ?

4) Are all these jumpers included in the kit ?

5) For connecting the I2C header, are the wire included in the kit ?

6) I am not planning to use On-board volume control, do I connect the PB4 to the 3.3V on the (ADC,15) on both the left and right board ?

Thank you.

I did, and I am a newbe too. And now my dual mono B IIIse is playing like a dream.
Good luck

Yes, I have read it carefully and thus I ask these questions. Some of those instruction does not ring my bell. And Brian make it very clear that we should questions instead of doing something that we do not understand. Words like 'is mounted' or 'put a jumper on' is not clear to me what it meant.

You understand it, good on you. And I envy you.

A jumper can be as simple as a piece of wire connected between two solderpoints. And you are absolute right, there are no such thing as a silly question.

Good luck

Can you explain ‘make sure L5(L5,20) is mounted’ ? Thanks.

Short the two pads. This can be a jumper (short wire), or whatever means you find most convenient.

L5 is mounted by default. Ignore this.

Yes.

No, any wire will do.

Just the board with the microcontroller.

I used some of the remaining ribbon cable to connect the I2C header. Just cut a three wire harness off the wider ribbon cable. I used the female connector terminals and housings listed under Molex connectors in the Integration Guide. You can just solder wires to the header pins too.
