I bought the early version of the Buffalo Dac with IVY several years ago; never got around to building it.

I am now in the process of building up the modules in order to use the DAC solely as a balanced headphone dac/amp.

Since, the IVY has been superseded by several versions, as well as the DAC chip, I have a couple questions:

What is best setup for driving balanced headphones? Will I be able to use the original IVY direct to headphone out in balanced mode? Or should I upgrade to the the more recent IVY III?

Most of the discussion I have seen about driving balanced headphones has been in reference to IVY III.

I need to be able to drive headphones with 65, 120 and 300 ohm impedances.

In terms of setting up the earlier versions of the Buffalo DAC and IVY in dual mono for balanced out, the manual for IVY version 2 states that "The IVY can be configured for dual mono operation for DACs which support it. When you are using the IVY in this manner it is recommended that you decrease the gain of the balanced to single ended converter by 6db because the voltage from the prior stage will be 4VRMS(+6db) at 0db in this mode. This is easily accomplished by making R13-16 half the value of R9-12. A good choice is 2K for R9-12 and 1K for R13-16."

If I want to match the gain with the headphones I can play around with the values of R13-16. Correct? Doing so, will give my 2-4VRMS output.

When setting up the earlier ver. 1.2 DAC for dual mono, I should close one of the ADDR headers by using a jumper. Correct?

I recently ordered the SPDIF MUX 4:1 module for use with the DAC as I2S input. On the DIP switch, in this case, all the pins should be set to low "-". Correct?

I believe the only other module I need is the Volumite to control the volume on the DAC. Correct? Also, for the Buffalo ver. 1.2, which firmware version should I order?

TP Buffalo 1.2

Apologies for the the rudimentary questions, but I want to make sure I have pieced together the best method to accomplish what I want to do.

Thanks.

I'll give you a partial answer. To add up I hope someone else steps in.

You don't need two IVY 's to do what you want. Simply connect the lefthand 9008 to the left input of the IVY and right to right.

Connect the cans to balanced output. Forget about the SE.

To control the amount of juice, yes you need a Volumite. Ask Brian upon ordering he will supply the correct firmware.
