This weekend I've finished building the Buffalo + IVY kit. Unfortunately after starting it for the first time one channel didn't work. I could track it down to the right channel of the Buffalo where no signal could be measured. The other channel works fine. Is there anything I could measure on the Buffalo to find the cause? I hope it's not the ESS9008 that is fried... The voltages I use (& checked) are the recommended 6 and 6.6 volts. I noticed that the heatsink of the power supply (on the LM317) gets quite hot, almost too hot to touch. This isn't the case with the Ivy's counterpart. Any hints? Mark.

Hi Mark,
I am not sure exactly what's wrong.
Can you measure the current draw at VA, and VD on the Buffalo?

Also check for a short from the right outputs to GND and each of outputs of the on board VREGs(the tab).

Hi Russ, thanks for your help. VA draws 174 mA, and VD 54 mA. There's no short between the output & ground, or between ground & the VREG tab (if that's what you meant?) I've tried another source, in case my rusty old cd-players spdif output was bad, but it didn't make a difference. In both cases the lock-led burns innocently... :-) I also measured Buffalo's output without IVY connected (maybe it shorted out on the input), but still one channel dead, and the other ok. Is the ESS9008 very sensitive to static electricity?

Sure it is ESD sensitive, but not any more than most such devices. VA current draw is a bit high (but not too bad), but VD is fine. What I meant was to also check for shorts between +out and -out (on right side) to both VREG tabs. Cheers! Russ Edited by user Monday, August 18, 2008 11:30:05 AM(UTC)

Okay, no shorts there either. I took the board out of the housing and visually checked it, but saw nothing faulty. I'm afraid this Buffalo is dead... (Or half dead to be precise) So when was the next batch arriving you said? :)
