Everything has been fine with my Buffalo DAC for about a year. Last week during playback all of a sudden the sound cut out and I'd get intermittent static type pops. At first I thought it was the USB to I2s converter however I tried a different set of i2s outputs from that module and still had the issue. I then tried using SPDIF input but I'm getting the same issue. The DAC will not get lock and the lock light will briefly light up every quarter of a second or so in even amounts of time. I would add that occasionally the music is audible but it is somewhat muffled before it cuts out again. Is there some way to troubleshoot the DAC to pinpoint the issue? Thank you. Buf I/II/III ?
Does the Buf have Tridents? If so, which versions ?
If so, carefully measure output of each (should be 3.3v / 3.3v / 1.2v)

It is a Buffalo II with tridents version 1.1. I'm measuring 1.2v on one of the side tridents but 2v for the middle one and 2v for the other side trident. In the attached picture I circled where I'm getting the various readings. The other measuring points on the tridents all read 5.4v. Edited by user Sunday, February 16, 2014 11:00:03 PM(UTC)

The two 3.3v regulators are measuring properly (3.3v out and 5.4v in) but I measure .8v on the output of the 1.2v regulator (and 5.4v in). Edited by user Monday, February 17, 2014 6:31:27 PM(UTC)

Then you got your culprit.
Put in a new one and you're good to go.
Also trim down a bit your 5.4v. The Tridents version 1 is better off using 5.2v.

Thanks. Any idea what may have happened? It seems odd it would just drop the voltage suddenly instead of just stop working completely. Also I assume there wont be any issue using one v3 trident with the older v1.1s also installed? Edited by user Monday, February 17, 2014 10:09:29 PM(UTC)

1.3v is the one which has most work to do. Now you haven't told which PSU you're using. Try measure the Vdd when the PSU is cold. Is the 5.4v higher at cold start ? The version 1 of the Tridents are using an opamp which as absolut max supply voltage @ 6v. The specified supply voltage range is up to 5.5v. That could be the explanation. There no problem combining version 1 and version 3. You should consider upgrading all of them to ver 3. Edited by user Tuesday, February 18, 2014 6:34:19 AM(UTC)

I just received the 1.2v trident in the mail. Unlike the version already installed this doesn't have a resistor for R4. Do I need to install a resistor in R4 for this to work properly with the Buffalo II?
I'm using a LCDPS with (I think R3/R4) resistors removed and jumpered to power the Buffalo.

No, the V3 Trident has the resistor pre-mounted (SMD) for Buffalo use. There is a spot for a TH resistor, but it is not needed unless you want to customize the current for a different application.
