Hi,
my plan is to build digital active crossover based on Najda DSP and 3 x buffalo III dac for 6 channel.

So before I start buying all the parts I have to see what do I nead ;)

Najda have I2S input and 6 x I2S output

the main question are ;

-what power supply to use with Buffalo III ?
-do I nead 3 x power supply for each Buffalo III or I can use one ? which one would be ''better'' for audio quality ?
-how can I control volume on Buffalo III ? Is it possible to use one volume controller for all 6 channels ?

thanks

Hi Yoke,

Let me make sure I understand what you want.

3 x Buffalo III-SE or One Buffalo III?

If you plan is one B3 then volume control is pretty simple.

If you plan 3 x B3SE then it is also doable, but requires a bit more thought.

I would recommend you use a B3 with three IVY-III - choose the 2 channels you want to have the best SQ and use 4 channels (2 each) of the B3 for those - one for each of the others.

If you go that route you could easily use just one of each Placid HD and Placid HD-BP.

If you really want to go all out you could use one Placid HD-BP per IVY-III.

Cheers!
Russ

Hi Russ
The thing is that I would like to do the bast I can. Not to look back thinking I could do something better ;).

So I was thinking to use 3 X Buffalo III/SE.

As I nead 2 channels for tweeters and 2 for midbass plus 2 for bass it's hard to tell which of them are more important in SQ.

I believe all are . As at the end I nead a good bass too, so...I was thinking to 3 identical DAC modules.

I know that maybe it' stupid to use high quality DAC for bass as it will play only couple Hz, like 150 ;)...but I nead it to be as good as possible.
Or maybe to use passive filter on bass driver...will see...
But for now I would like to do it as 3 X Buffalo SE.

- So I nead advise about power supply just for those 3 DAC modules with tridents ?

- And how to control volume on them (6 chanels ) from one unit ?

I don't know what I/V stage I will use at the end...
(For now I prefer opc NTD1 (nelson pass D1), why ? I can't tell,realy don't know)

That is going to be a challenge!

One way would be to use an external controller with two I2C channels. The ES9018 only has two possibly I2C addresses so one I2C channel can only control two DACs.

The other would be to use the on-board controllers, and share the wiper and gnd connections of the ADC header and only have one DAC supply the VDD. That is probably the simplest solution.

Because of the high current demand - I would use three separate supplies. The newly redesigned Placid HD would be a great choice. If you want to be a beta tester of that new supply you can order it. It is brand new - so I want to get some user feedback.

For sake of awesome sound, space, and power consumption I would suggest IVY-III for output stage. It has a nice low output impednace and can drive any cable with ease.

Thanks Russ

- So, you will go with 3 power suplays, one per DAC.
(jea...thanks for the offer about testing new power suplay as it will take samo time to buy DACs, so it will have to waith ;))

- And there is ''easy'' way to control volume with one volume control ;) (will contact you once I start with this)

now I have to collect money, it will take some time as this is ''big'' project.

For I/V stage, I appreciate your advice and will look more into IVY-III, hope I will found some reviews and comparation to other solution.
If I would build simple 2 channel DAC than I could play and compare things but,
my system is full 2.5 active and can't compare anything as it have to be 6 channels or nothing...

So I have to play safe and smart ;), as I will not know the result until all 6 channels are done...
and can't afford changing and experimenting...what ever I buy or build I will stick with it for long time ;)

The heat and power consumption don't worry me as I have some A class power amps, 4 channels (AlephX 60W for mid and AlephMini for twitters), and D class for bass (Icepower ASX125).

thanks once again for help and advices
will get back to you, once I collect some money

I'd like to test it. And besides taking some measurements, I can even document it Angel

Brian is going to put them up very soon. I am writing a post to describe the changes.

The beta (prototype) boards have a small error, but it is very trivial to work around.
