Hello!
I would like to compare the balanced outputs with the SE outputs. I have got XLR-RCA adapters which short pin 3 to pin 1. Is that okay?
Thanks,
Florian

No. This way you short the negative half Legato to GND.

Thank you for the quick reply. That I know that it will be shorted. But does it harm the output stage, will elements get ruined? The thought I have got is, that I have bought high quality adapters that are purpose designed to make use of balanced outputs as not balanced outputs. And with every DAC I buy in a shop I would use these adapters without hesitating. It's just that I wanted to go 100% sure, your answer suprises me a bit! - So, will it get destroyed if I use the adapters? Is it bad luck due to the discrete design that it is really forbidden, would it work with short save ICs? Thank you, Florian Edited by user Tuesday, August 13, 2013 4:57:20 PM(UTC)

It will kill the Legato transistors. Simply shorting -Out to GND is not the proper way of converting from balanced to single-ended... you loose all benefits of common-mode cancellation. Why not just use the bal->se stage that is provided on the board? It does use an op-amp, but the performance will be much better then the adapters.

Okay, thank you. The point is that I have read in this forum that the balanced outputs are better than SE, just wanted to find a way to compare or use them - although I dont have a preamp nor amp with balanced inputs unfortunately...

To use the bal for SE you would need coupling caps to get rid of the DC on the balanced outputs. I have yet to implement this, as you would lose half of the DACs output (just be using one side of it effectively) so not ideal. the Bal/SE stage without the buffers is almost as nice as the balanced, and as I need the SE stage for DJ mixing (into an analogue mixer) I am looking to upgrade the op amp to a high end MUSES. Will let you know how I go.
