Hi, I purchased the joshua tree a few weeks ago. I'm in the process of getting the needed parts and putting it together.

I wanted to know, what exactly the volumite is sending the relay driver board? How it is actually accomplishing this?

I'd like to eventually replace the volumite (or the pot) on the volumite with something top secret.

Why would you change the volumite??
The avr on the volumite just reads the pot's resistance and translates this to the corresponding attuenation, so it can set the relay driver to switch the correct relays in a way that the overall resistance causes the signal to be attuenated to the correct signal strength. Changing the pot will certainly not make it sound better or different. Try changing the resistors if you want it to sound different.

He is looking to use a different controller for the relay boards.

It is sending I2C commands. The outputs of the I2C expander act as bits 0-8, which are buffered, and drive the relays.

Hi, I've got couple of quick questions;

Is step 1 = -63.5db and step 128 = 0db?

and mute is mute (step 0)

Trying to remember, but I think its:

Step 0 = -63.5db
Step 127 = 0db
Step 128 = Mute (eighth relay on shorts to GND).
