Hi There,

I intend to build a full dual mono dac to drive my high end amplifier and speakers. The dac shall be connected to my pc or/and music server via a 1m spdif coaxial cable. At the other end, the dac will be connected to my amplifier through a pair of 1.2m xlr cable. Most of the time, I listen to the hi res music from hdtracks, linn etc.

I have considered the following components: -

1) Dual buffalo-iiise together with shunt regulator modules and transformers; and

2) dual legato i/v stage with placid hd bipolar supply and transformers.

Can anyone advice my above suggestions or other alternatives to be considered.

Thank you.

You could use a single Legato rather than two. There is a thread here talking about that.

I went from dual mono BIII/dual Legato 3.1 to one Legato connecting via balanced out. I think it sounds better with the single Legato. Another plus for those that might want or need the features is you have single ended and headphone out available with the dual mono single Legato build. Here is a thread how to wire it.

http://www.twistedpearau...-Mono-Single-Legato.aspx

Due to increased current/output voltage of the Legato Russ made some resistor suggestions to place between pos and neg of balanced out in this thread. (Post # 9).

Note that you will also have common mode DC between the balanced ground and balanced pos/balanced neg of balanced out with a dual mono/single Legato build. This common mode issue is well documented here and at diyaudio. (The common mode DC was higher with my dual build than my single BIII single Legato build). I used AC coupling caps on my DAC balanced output based on my amp manufacturers suggestion.

Currently, my cd player balanced and se output at 4v rms and 2v rms per channel respectively. On the other hand, my sim moon pre amp balanced and se output at 12v rms and 6v rms per channel repectively to feed my sim moon power amp. Of course, balanced output gave me the highest audio enjoyment.

Theoretically legato's class a discrete circuit produces higher audio quality, however, legato's balanced and se output at 1.5v rms per channel which is insufficient to drive my preamp and power amp. As such, I'm of the opinion that dual legato might be sufficient.

What about the ivy-iii? Have anyone compared the audio quality between legato and ivy-iii?

Thank you.

Hi There,

I have decided to place the order as follows: -

A) Digital Section

1) Dual Buffalo III SE DAC with AVCC dual shunt regulator module, Trident 3.3v shunt regulator module and
Trident 1.2v shunt regulator module;

2) Dual Placid HD supply;

3) Transformer 9v 30va.

B) I/V Stage

1) Dual IVY III with Placid HD BP kit combo;

2) Dual transformers 15v 50va.

Can anyone please advice me other factors or alternatives I should consider.

Thank you.
