Finally. It took me half a year to build this DAC. It has been my 1st DIY project. Taking into account that I had to order different parts from all over the world in addition to DAC itself and being a complete nube in electonics I don't think it took me long. I tried IVY and Legato, finally I chose Legato. Problems I had: 1. mixed up transistors in power supply units, ruined them while unsoldering. Finally ordered a Hakko unsoldering gun, a very useful thing 2. since we have 220v in Russia, I had problems with B3 locking using S/PDIF-4 Input Board and Sidecar with the same power supply. So I mounted a separate one with 4.3v, I found it being the best voltage in these conditions. I used a AMB stuff for a fancy button switch: The most time consuming thing is arranging everything in the case: I need to change the back panel, change the balanced cables and do a light modification to a front panel. That's it. I feed this DAC with a SPDIF signal from my Linn streamer or Cyrus CD player then it goes to my Classe + B&W 802. The sound is terrific. Nicely done! How does it compare to the Linn streamer when you let the streamer do the conversion? Which Linn streamer are you talking about by the way? |
