Hello,

I am planning to use a miniDSP digital crossover with the BuffaloIII DAC, using 4 channel SE in/output.

My question is: Is it possible to use 1 Ivy I/V board for all of the 4 SE channels?

Regards,
Joseph

Hi,

IVY stage only have to channels.
I can't wonder how could you have more channels without using to IVY boards.

But I think you could use just one DAC and one IVY stage to connect to a miniDSP to split signals there, but then you are loosing all the advantages of the bufallo/IVY because you are digitalizing again and waisting the DAC conversion of the buffalo.

better idea would be to use a minidigi from (minidsp) and connect the outputs to several DACs?
I am not sure if this is doable with the buffalo board. unless you use 2 different fuffalo dacs...

Other people will know better.

Good luck

Hi charly,

Thanks for your reply, I just realized how stupid my question was :)

The chain I want to use is: nanoDIGI 2x8K digital crossover -> BuffaloIII -> IvyIII

I know now that i have to use 2x Ivy IV stages for 4 channels, but do I also need 2x B3 to run 4 channels SPDIF?

So you would put the buffalo after the nanodigi.

I know the Buffalo can have up to 8 outputs.

But I am not sure if it can handle different inputs at the same time...
I would be interested too if it were possible...

By the way I was thinking about implementing just an active crossover based on opamps LM4562 (i like that one).

S/PDIF input is stereo-only with the ES9018.

If you can provide I2S, you could use a single BIII by mapping each channel to use two internal DACs. You then group the outputs into four groups of two, and feed them to two IVYs.

Thanks good info. Thanks Brian.

Does the miniDigi support I2C outputs? maybe yes... I don't remember, I read time ago its specification.

They would need to be I2S, and no it doesn't: outputs are Coax/Toslink. You could feed those to 2 DACs of course, but it would get a little expensive.

I am looking at the digilog manual here: http://www.minidsp.com/i...ts/miniDIGI%20manual.pdf
it seems to have i2s outputs available so maybe the project is doable.

Thanks for clearing that up.

In the case that I have only S/PDIF outputs on the digital XO, could i use two Wolfson 8804 S/PDIF Transceiver Modules to feed one B3?

Absolutely.

It seems like you should be able to pull I2S off the XO module though, using the I2S jumper header. I only looked at it for a moment while in a meeting (don't tell), but it looks like you can tap I2S Data, as well as MCK and LRCK.

I could be wrong.

Maybe an obvious question but,
What is the dinamic range and bits of one of the 8 DAC units inside the buffalo?

Cheers,

The manual does mention I2S out, but only describes it for coupling multiple boards. It's not mentioned as an output let alone as a means to connect a DAC. Strange, but it looks like it could work.
