Hi there! I have a confusion about direction of 20pins ribbon cable from BIII to SPDIF4, the manual said that should pay attention on the dot and redwire of ribbon cable. However, I saw at least two working BIII image, pin 1 of ribbon cable on BIII and pin 1 of it on SPDIF4 was swapped. Could anyone teach me which way is correct, should I connect in attached picture? Beside, may I know function/operation of MUTE LED, LOCK LED. Normally, when open BIII, I got MUTE LED is ON. Is this true that if I play (got SPDIF signal in), LOCK LED will be on and MUTE LED is off? Thank you bitinhvi attached the following image(s): SPDIF ribbion 2.JPG (55kb) downloaded 47 time(s).You cannot view/download attachments. Try to login or register.

Hello! Pin 1 on the DAC board is right above the Buffalo's head, so yes on the way you have it. (If your flat cable has the Red edge, just disconnect the cable and turn it around so you get into the habit of identifying pin 1 polarity). If the wiring were reversed, I don't think it would work as the outputs on the 4 channel S/PDIF board are pins 3-10 (output A, B, C and D, reference page 7 of Leon's excellent BIII integration guide). http://www.twistedpearau...gration_Guide_V1.2.6.pdfNot sure what would happen if the cable were reversed with power from the DAC board pins 19 and 20 (reference page 45 of the integration guide) going to the first two pins of the 4 channel S/PDIF board. Or possibly that was taken into consideration in the design so no short to GND would occur if the cable were reversed. Yes on the mute light being on until the BIII locks on to a signal; then mute is off and lock led is lit. Music doesn't need to be playing for a lock light. My lock light illuminates with any source connected, like a SB Touch or CD player modded for I2S/DSD out. This is how my single BIII was connected. Even though I used a Sidecar between the DAC and 4 channel board, pin one should match pin 1 from the DAC board all the way to the 4 channel input board. Thank you for detail information, SCompRacer. Initially I know that I should follow manual from Leon, however, I have to twist the ribbon cable in order aligning pin 1 of BIII and pin 1 of SPDIF-4. Moreover, I saw at least 02 working DACs has reversed cable like that, so I am confuse. Finally, when I align pin 1 on both board, voltage drop immediately from 5.2V to 2V, despite of I set CCS to 490mA and shunting current are more than 100mA. I don't know why I always face problem with voltage sag on this project. Voltage are normal if I try to reversed the cable.
In order to speed up the process (I can not wait to hear the sound of this DAC), I want to by SPDIF board. Can I take SPDIF signal (Coaxial/Optical) directly to D1 pin on BIII board?
Beside, can I get SE output directly from BIII? if yes, which output on BIII should be connected to SE output stage? My Legato is having a problem so I temporarily use another output stage to test if BIII is working or not.
Thank you.

Unless it is TTL level spdif, but it is probably not. Thank you. Should be the same as with the legato. See the integration guide for the output connections. |

Update on 22 Sep.
Sad news, after follow advice from SCompRacer, I found that I misunderstood Pin 1 on BIII board. After soldering the connector, I could not see the dot on the Buffalo's head. Beside, after search some topic, I found that I carelessly swapped VDD and DVCC. Hope everything is fine after swap it again.
@Corpius, because BIII support ballanced output, so what I mean is can I connect its output directly to a preamplifier with Single End input (RCA jack)? I just want to check if BIII still working, so the sound quality is not important to me on this step.
Thank you.

No, you need a I/V stage. |

Thank you Corpius, I just found out that 01 LME49600 on my Legato was dead. It should be fine after replace it.
Can you help with a newbie question, how should I set DIP switch if I use BIII in stereo mode with only Optical/Coaxial input at D1?
Thank you very much.

According to manual, I set DIP SW as following: SW1: All OFF SW2: 1-2 ON. 3-8 OFF
I tried to feed Optical SPDIF signal to D1 -> D4 but still got no LOCK LED. Voltage to BIII and TOSLINK is 5.2V, shunted current (with TOSLINK) is 70mA. Voltage of Tridents are correct (3.27V and 1.27V), their position are fine. All LED (except LOCK) are lit.
Pls help.
