Hi,

I have an Opus DAC in dual mono configuration with the WM8804 receiver board. It has been working fine for a couple of months with a pc as a music source playing only 16/44 files. Recently i bought a Squeezebox Touch and started using it as a source. When playing 24/96 flacs crackling/ static noise can be heard on both channels which changes loudness with the volume setting.

I checked the SQT by connecting another DAC and playing 24/96 files -> no crackles / static. Any ideas what could be wrong and where to start troubleshooting?

Try moving the OSR switch to the middle position

Hi,

I had the OSR in the open position which delivered the mentioned problem. I tried the 0 and 1 position, 0 gives no 24/96 capability but plays 16/44 with a little static, 1 gives a lot of static.

Other ideas anyone? The dac is pretty much unusable right now...

Both dacs are not working? check the power supply?

Both dacs are working, but with the mentioned crackles/static on both channels. I'm trying to figure out if the problem is with the dac boards itself or with the wm8804 board. How can i find out which part failing? Brian or Russ any input would be welcome..

You need to check each part of the chain in isolation. Check if the source is good, then each DAC etc.

Since both DACs are doing the same thing I would start to suspect wiring or the receiver, or the source.

Hi Russ,

I'm pretty sure the source is not the problem because i have tried it with two other dacs and then it works fine without crackles. I've redone all the wiring and there is no change. Also the dac was working fine with 16/44 source material. So, just like you, i think the first thing to check is the receiver board. How/what should i check? All leds are green...

Do you have another I2S source you can use in it's place?

Hi Russ,

I don't have another I2S source myself but fortunately i can use one from a friend who has a dac receiver board with I2S output. I'll give it a try this weekend and come back to you with the results..

I tried an alternative I2S source today and... no crackles/noise. So the problem is most likely with the receiver board. I reconnected the TP receiver board and the crackles came right back. To find out if there's a loose connection somewhere i started wiggling the wires around and gently pushing the components down on the board while playing some music. When i push the wm8804 chip gently down the crackles dissapear! So i think i'm on to something. I don't see any cold solders so what to do next? It remains strange that this only happens with 24/96 material and not with 16/44.. Or is there a logical explanation for this, higher bitrate = more current?

Is it possible/wise to resolder the wm8804 chip? I bought the receiver board in january of this year pre-build to avoid the need for soldering components this small myself..

Since it had been working fine for a few months, my guess is that a crack has developed in a solder join on the board, and pressing on the chip flexes the board in such a way that the crack is bridged. It could just as likely be on a resistor or capacitor as the chip itself.

Cracks usually form due to flexing or heating cooling cycles. Since this board doesn't get hot, it's probably related to board flex.

You can try tapping the solder joint on the board with a soldering iron.
