I have the optional firmware for the I2S unlocking/timing issue on the way, but I was wondering - while I wait for it to land, can I remove the current firmware and will the DAC work in I2S mode? I'm not running a Volumite, just a BII, with Legato, LCDPS, and Placid 3.1.

Yes, you can. ES9018 will work with default settings. I tried for another reason and Buffalo II worked with I2S input.

Correction. BII will work okay with S/PDIF input w/o the firmware, but not with I2S. You will get sound, but will not have the correct input channel mappings set internally.
