The Tridents I received recently did not come with the R4 (10 & 20 ohm) resistors. I wonder if the resistors are no longer required. Since I had the resistors on hand, I did the following:
• When the R4s were installed, only one LED led up on each Trident. Signal did not get locked.
• After I removed the R4s, all the LEDs on the Tridents led up and the signal locked.

OK, this is the second B3 stereo DAC I’m building. The Tridents were part of the B3 combo. The Tridents are Version 3.0. Here are some details: 1. This newly built system was tested with the B3 board that I built last year and it worked fine. All Trident LEDS led up. The Placid HD power supply voltage was set to 5.25v and the current was set to 490ma. 2. When the R4s were installed on the new Tridents and connected to the new B3 and the system, the PSU voltage dropped and measured at about 4.8v. If I remember correctly, the Tridents measured at 0v. I was unable to raise the PSU voltage and current. 3. When the R4s were removed, the PSU voltage measured at 5.25v and the current measured at 490ma and the music sounded good. QN1 on the PSU was quite warm but QN2 was cool. Questions: Do I need to install the R4s on the Tridents? Do you think my Tridents are faulty? Will my DAC get damaged without the R4s? Please advise. The V3 tridents for BIII come with R4 already installed. Do not add another R4 or you will have two in parallel and way too much current. We will also have Tridents with no R4 for people who need custom current values, but the ones for B3 are already set up. Edited by user Saturday, February 25, 2012 12:39:27 PM(UTC)

Is the r4 resistor a small surface mount resistor and the through hole slot is supposed to be empty? Did not know and took the 10 ohm resistor from the old trident and installed it.

Trident V1.1 requires R4 to be mounted. Trident V3 comes with an SMT resistor in place already.
Basically, if your Trident came with a Resistor(s), you need to mount it.
