Hello, i’m in the process of building a BIII with Ivy3,S/Pdif-4 board and Sidecar, powered by Placid HD and Placid BP. Inputs: InA: Toslink, InB: Toslink, InC: Coax, InD: Switching Sidecar to accept USB/I2S from WaveIO board. I have a few questions in particular concerning the Integration Guide from LeonVB. See page 15 of Integration Guide:In the table on upper part of the page you get information how to connect various kinds of inputs. For Toslink (TTL level S/Pdif) a 10k resistor has been soldered on the S/Pdif-4 board as a voltage divider for the strong TTL signal. Looking at he table It says: TTL level S/P dif: connect + on module to + and connect - on module to 0V/GND. What module? is it the toslink module? There is no + nor - on that module. Connections are marked left to right: Out, G, G, Vcc. I know what they mean, but information in the table is very ambiguous and confusing. To blurr the information even more, Leon writes (below the table): Quote:”So only for a balanced AES/EBU input you use the GND connector on the input block, for all other types of input you just use the + and – connectors of the S/PDIF-4 Input Board.” So, reading and interpreting the table I should connect : Out on Toslink module to + on S/Pdif board G on Toslink module to GND on S/Pdif board Following the text under the table I should connect: Out on Toslink module to + on S/Pdif board G on Toslink module to GND on S/Pdif board Many thanks tthough to Leon for the excellent integration guide. Maybe I did not read it correctly? Can you please enlighten me about this? Henri PS: It would be nice to have a schematic of the S/Pdif board. Please read the table carefully. If you look at header of the table and see: Connect + on module to Connect – on module to Connect GND on module to R<Z> RS<Z> Where do you find these items?
And later I add: "So only for a balanced AES/EBU input you use the GND connector on the input block".
This leads to the connections: + to Out - to G
If it is any consolation, I warned people that the GND connector on the SPDIF 4:1 would cause confusion.

Hi Leon,
of course, You are right . But I think you will admit that the word "Module" itself creates confusion (The toslink board is a module and so is the S/Pdif board.) Imho the text should say: "Connect + on S/Pdif board to" etc. Many thanks for answering so quickly, Henri

Would it be beneficial, in preventing interference, to use a screened cable and connect the toslink module as follows: Out on Toslink module to + on S/Pdif-4 board G on toslink module to - on S/Pdif-4 board Screen connected only to GND S/Pdif-4 board Henri Edited by user Friday, February 24, 2012 2:01:12 AM(UTC)

You will not have any issues with interference without a screen.

Maybe I'm a little bit Paranoid about interference issues. In a former life I was a radio amateur , and I know how interferences can creep in. Thanks for your comment Brian.
