Hello,

The BIII was working fine with SPDIF before. Then I connected I2S from Alesis IO14 (tapped and traced from Alesis DAC datasheet - CS4382) to BIII. The wires were short, the original Alesis DAC board was disconnected.

After this connection, no sound / just mute diode on and later I tried SPDIF - and no lock... just mute again... and no sound.

Any clue how to proceed with check what is wrong, if anything is burned etc.?

Can wrongly mis-connected I2S harm the BIII? What "safety" is used here to check/replace? (resistors, caps?)

The I2S connection was done as follows:

General I2S name/Buffalo name/ PIN CS4382 / Crystal name

GND / GND / 5 / GND / Ground reference
BCK (Bit Clock) / DCK / 9 / SCLK1 Serial Clock
LRCK (Word Clock) / D1 / 7 / LRCK1 Left Right Clock
DOUT (Data) / D2 / 8 / SDIN1 Serial Audio Data

Any help is appreciated!!!

These signals by necessity go directly to the DAC. I2S signals can be DC so you cannot use caps. There is some series resistance, but that won't save you from ESD.

It could be that there was some ESD or some other voltage spike that damaged one or more digital input into the DAC. You could try using a different input from D1 for SPDIF.

Sorry for misstype - I have Buffalo II. But anyway, I am quite sure I wired it correctly, should there be any difference between I2S accepted by CS DAC (multichannel one) and Buffalo / ESS chip?

If I understand correctly my D1 connection is (probably) dead and I should try switching to consumer SPDIF (spdif on board) + spdif switch on?

Is there some way how to make any diagnostics what happened? What to avoid and test with I2S before connecting next time?

Many thanks!

It is just as likely a loose connection, cause by the re-wiring. Did you set the SPDIF switch correctly during the test, and did it get switched back?

Hi, Yes, the wires were wired correctly and switch was also set to TTL as it was working before I attached I2S from Alesis.

As I have no scope I cannot say for sure that there is I2S coming from Alesis, I am just assuming that what is written in CS DAC datasheet is true and taped the path back to the DSP chip of Alesis which is producing the I2S (and I2C and so on). If the DSP will send something bad over it, the CS should be fried also but is not...

I will try to put the SPDIF to SPDIF and switch it to consumer but right now I have it not near by me.

Is the Alesis also your S/PDIF source? Is it possible it is damaged and no longer outputting S/PDIF correctly?

No, I have (a lot of) other SPDIF sources. And I have also another BII board that works (not tried the I2S connection, now worried to burn that...). So the second BII works with Alesis SPDIF flawlessly...

Is there a way to get new ES9018 spare chip from you?
Here in Europe it is very hard to get in small quantities.
I have a friend who has cell phone repair service able to resolder such chip.

Try checking the trident outputs(especially the 1.2V). I changed the clock and the Buf didn't work. Turns out the problem wasn't the clock install but the trident.

Tridents are not installed (BII - sorry for mistake in topic). Even I have them ready for it...

We checked all regulators, they are givint 3.3 / 1.2 VDC, the current draw is 230mA or something like this, tried both Placid and Sigma PSUs... running at 5.5 / 5.3 VDC

As I read from this forum and TPA guys reactions, the DAC can be easily be damaged by ESD so the point is how to check if it is the chip and where to get new one...

?

It also may be a damaged comparitor (S/PDIF level conversion) and not the ES9018.

OK. But putting SPDIF into D1 and switching properly the switch does nothing as well (worked before).

How to check the comparator is working or not? What parts to replace or check? I can see comparator on old schematics of Buffalo I, unfortunately I do not have the schematics of Buffalo II.
