Started in diyAudio.com about this problem:

"Russ, Brian my Buffalo II has problem with locking S\PDIF. I listened the dac half year without any problem. I tried everything. Different USB to S\Pdif converters, regular CD...Finally I disconnected everything and powered the dac from battery. The power amplifier was also disconnected from main supply. The laptop was running on battery and the LOCK diode still blinking. Is there anything I could try to solve the problem?
I have no problem with other dac, connected in the same system.
Buffalo is in metal box, grounded.
Any help, please ...
Thanks,
Angel

Hi Angel, it sounds like one possibility is that you might have a damaged comparator (you would need to check the output of the comparator to know for sure).
Post to the support forum and we will see if we can help you fix it.

Cheers!
Russ"

If you can check if the comparator is still functioning. This will require a scope.

This sounds like what typically happens when the comparator become damaged (usually a product of ESD).

Also double check the SPDIF switch is making good contact.

If you have a TTL level SPDIF source (you can get one from us) you can try taking the TTL output to D1 directly.

Hello Russ,
I connected I2S signal from PCM2706, and the problem is same.
May I send you the Buffalo board to repair ?

Thanks,
Angel

That is likely a different "problem". If you have the original firmware, I2S will loose lock because the DPLL is set with the narrowest bandwidth. To fix that you need the "high bandwidth firmware" from here: http://www.twistedpearau...om/control/volumite.aspx

Different sources - S\PDIF and I2S, same result. I don't think that the problem is different.
Russ, Brian do you think I have to try "high bandwidth firmware"

The switch was the problem. Unfortunately the switch make good contact when I measure it ...
After Brick wall and check with scope, I soldered two wires and jumper and now Whistle
I'm going to connect Hiface I2S, do I need "high bandwidth firmware"
