Hello I've been using the B3 for a couple of weeks so far a have a few questions. Problems I've been having are, spdif lock light drops out for a second the back on again. The sound drops out at the same time. This may only happen 2 to 3 times while playing a whole album. Also it can loose lock but still play but the sound is echoed bordering on rubbish. Usually at the start of a new track on the same album(interesting sound effects but) How low can the VDD voltage go to before it gives problems? VDD=1.163V; DVCC=3.249V; VD_XO=3.223V AVCC Dual 3.415 / 3.411 Placid 5.153V 513mA 52mA shunt 10Vac in tried turning placid voltage up to 5.250 made no difference. Also tried parallel extra 9vac windings, just in case current from transformer was low I'm trying to attach a pic what size pic's are acceptable.. Also these faults occur on different pc's and both pc's run other dac's ok No idea which firmware as the chip is not labelled Yes It is in a Test chassis Edited by user Friday, October 21, 2011 11:32:17 PM(UTC)

Try increasing the Placid's current a bit.

It's already at 513mA that's with 52mA for shunt. I did have the shunt current at 60mA but at 52mA the Tridents were already toasty approx 61 Degree's

Very strange. Could just be a case of noisy ground return. Have you tried other sources? just curious. VDD should be ok. Your transformer voltage is on the high side for the application, but should still be ok. Also make sure your shunt current is not dropping while you sources are playing. I would stay up around 5.25V make sure you recheck shunt current after such changes.

I had similar issue with SPDIF output of Samsung TV, but the lock was dropped each 10 seconds. It helped me to change DIP switch for DPLL bandwidth from "Default" to "Low". Edited by user Saturday, October 22, 2011 12:26:06 PM(UTC)

Russ and Brien Yes it is strange... Two different sources(pc's) both coax out , one with a asus dx s/card and the other with an azuentech prelude s/card. both pc's been running and used ok for over a year with other dacs.
worked all the dip switches back and forth a few times
upped the placid voltage is 5.25 when hot Shunt current to 60mA not playing but after warmup.
shunt current roaming between 55.4mA and 64mA when playing over an hour period.
seems ok at present but will leave playing for the rest of the day.

Just an update
Been playing continuously since my last post.
seems ok
Now wondering whether it was, the turn up current or, working the dip switches.(bad contact on dip switch)
I'll lower the shunt current next weekend just to test.
Russ or Brien The DPLL switches.... they rang from low to high in five steps. So, How is Default setting relevant to this range?
miero Thanks,but I did try varying these for an experiment, try setting for highest DPLL and listen some interesting sound effects when it doesn't lock. echoes

I was also having problems with SPDIF lock dropping every now and then when using RCA coax connection. When playing a 24bit/96kHz source, it was loosing lock quite a lot, about every 15-20 minutes. I tracked it down to power surges caused by fridge/laundry machine/electric heater turning on and off. Even ringing the doorbell caused BIII to loose lock. It was solved by two fixes: 1) I put a filter on the power line. I used this one http://lv.farnell.com/js...ctdetail.jsp?SKU=9586130 . An X2 class capacitor across the live and neutral wires may be sufficient. Adding the filter also made a slight change to the sound, making it cleaner and very slightly more "etched". The filter stopped BIII from loosing lock when the doorbell rung, but occasionally the lock was still lost when household appliances went on and off. 2) For hooking up the RCA socket to the 4 input SPDIF board I had used a short length (about 4cm) of twisted pair wire extracted from CAT5e network cable. I replaced it with a snippet of RG179 coax and the lock has never dropped again. Edited by user Thursday, November 10, 2011 10:56:57 AM(UTC)
