Today I received the Buffalo III. All right. Thank you very much. But there is no user manual. When will it be available? And finally, the question of the output stage. My intention is a dual mono. And the question is. ¿I can use one buffalo III for each channel with the output stage of the image directly? http://flic.kr/p/afUUMg Currently I'm using a Buffalo 1.0 without problems. Hi Amaro, The BIII can be used in dual mono with tube output. I'm using the Legato 3.1 in dual mono but I also have another setup with Tube output that I use with the flick of a switch I'm using the Tube-I-Zator with the Shunt module Tube-I-ZatorShunt moduleI'm not fully done with the Tube output but I should be done soon! You will just have to hook everything up correctly.
That said, I would suggest looking at the IVY3. It offers the best measured performance (THD+N well below -120dB), and in essence it is a fully differential amp. Yes, it uses opamps but these are used in a slightly unconventional way. I think with the output you're looking at the performance will be substantially lower.

I do not want to contradict LeonvB on this one as this is really a question of personal preference but for me, I much prefer the Legato 3.1 if going the solid state way but again, this is a question of taste!

Oh certainly, I totally agree people should build it just the way they like to. But I think the IVY3 is often underestimated, just because it's design is using opamps.
And let's be honest: if you want to go dual mono BIII, wouldn't you want to build something that performs BEST? I mean: the 9018 is a very neutral DAC, if you don't like that it's perhaps a better idea to build a dual mono Opus. If I'm not mistaken that could actually even be performing better than a BIII with a less than optimal output stage.

So I think the connection would be as follows:
Buffalo mono Left channel board...
Lout+ and Rout- to Left+ grid
Lout- and Rout+ to left- grid
Buffalo mono Right channel board...
Lout- and Rout+ to Right+ grid
Lout+ and Rout- to Right- grid
Is that correct?
Can damage the buffalo?

If large DC voltages are present yes it could definitely damage the ES9018. You would want to use AC coupling caps to be safe.

Have you had a chance to listen to your Tube-I-Zator fed by the Buffalo? I also have set of the Tube-I Zator boards and plan on feeding them with a Buffalo III.

Not yet,
I've just finished assembling and testing them but did not hook them up yet.
The signal IN only has 1v to 900mV if I recall. Could be less or a little more.
Don't know if this is high enough to damage the ES9018
Russ, do you know if this is borderline and what would be the lowest safe margin?

Will do! I'm just trying to find an efficient way of having both Legato 3.1 and Tube-I-Zator on the same DAC with the shortest cable possible... Right now I'm experimenting with relays. I wish TP had a solution for that!  - It would also permit switching from Legato to IVY III for example... (Just a thought for Russ and Brian) ;) Ciao! Do
