Maybe it is listed elsewhere that I have not found. The question is: "What is the maximum practical length of the volumite wiring.". I am doing a build for my father, and he really should have a remote at his listening chair. I considered a remote, but it seems like over kill and pricey from what I have seen. I'd love to run the I2C about 15-20' if possible.

I ran mine with about 15" in length. No problems at all! I think 15" to 20" is ok but not for anything longer. Hope Russ or Brian would comment on this. Good luck, Milton Edited by user Saturday, July 30, 2011 10:45:57 AM(UTC)

I2C bus length depends on the cable used and the clock frequency. If using CAT5 wire, at least 30 feet should be doable. If using twisted pair converters or low clock frequencies, 300m can be reached. I think you'll be ok.

LeonvB: Do I use the cat5 as 3 twisted pairs? One each for Vcc, SDA and SCL with the other half of the pair being grounds? Edited by user Sunday, August 7, 2011 8:37:50 AM(UTC)

That's how most people do it, and quite a few of them created longer runs (17m, 20m, etc.).

As GLT mentioned, you are really better off extending the pot cable. It is just voltage, no data.

Why don;t you buy a Alps pot and remote and mount the volumite on that ? :d/

Thank you Brian!
I debated on a typical remote, but it is not required in this instance and I would prefer to save the expense. It is for my father. He is retired, and a "big ole knob" will be preferable.
