Hi
Sorry for the dumb question (by a "digital" guy): What is the need or the difference to use an active circuit like the ballsie versus a simple solution like doing the conversion on the "cable side" ? there it seems as well that several solutions exist, like shortening 1+3 on the xlr side and just use 2 for the signal to the rca jack ?
I am really confused here as there are so many possibilities....
Best regards
christoph

Balanced is using a differential signal to improve signal integrity. For this reason you'll want to keep the signal balanced for as long as you possibly can. With shorting you're throwing away half of the signal. While this is the cheapest way to get rid of balanced, you're reducing the total voltage swing of the signal. An example: you start at 0V, 0V (+ GND). After 1ms, you're measuring 2V, -2V. This is 4V swing in 1ms. If you throw away half of the signal you'll reduce this to 2V/ms. I think you can figure out the rest...
