Hello, I am not getting lock with any of the inputs when I use the S/PDIF coaxial. I connected the Toslink module and immediately I got lock. I am using Murata DA101C transformers since I used them in another DAC which uses CS8416, I thought it should be ok to use them. Is the transformer which is causing the issue or could be something else?

If you take the transformer out, do you get lock? How do you have the transformer wired and terminated?

I can remove the transformer and check but want to make sure if the transformer would be the cause before desoldering it. As far as wiring, I am using normal wire with RCA jack soldered on one end and other end to the connector on the board.
All the inputs get lock when I connect the TOSLINK module.

When you say you are getting lock with the TOSLINK module, it that without and source connected to it, or only when there is source material?

I get lock when the source is turned on irrespective of the source playing music or not (when I turn on the CD player, the optical output starts glowing). But when I connect Coax, even if the source is playing it looks like as if the source is turned off or not connected. Edited by user Sunday, March 27, 2011 9:29:13 AM(UTC)

Where on the Buffalo have you connected the S/PDIF wires? On GND-S/PDIF or GND-D1? Is the S/PDIF switch on or off?
I think the Toslink module output TTL level S/PDIF while your CDP will be consumer level.

And you have the Murata transformers mounted in place of the Newavas I assume. Looking at the datasheets, to appears the outputs of the Muratas will be 180deg out of phase, meaning rising signals are instead falling signals. I think it may be your transformers.

SPDIF is bi-phase marked so the phase *should* not matter. But you do need to be sure that the COAX SPDIF is coming in through the SPDIF input with the switch closed.
You can't have both the toslink and the cox input at the same time. Is that what you are trying?

Russ, I am not trying to use both coax and toslink at the same time. I am going to be using only the coax. Since coax did not work, I tried connecting the toslink module. Russ, I went ahead and removed one of the transformers (on input 1). Connected the input directly to one end of the CIN4 capacitor. The result was the same, coax doesn't work and toslink works :-(. Are you sure your source is outputting signal via the coax? Do you have another DAC that locks on it?

Yes Brian, I am sure the source is outputting signal. I tested it connecting to my home theater receiver.

The way you have it connected in the above pic won't work. There is nothing connecting the primary side of input 1 and the secondary side. You would have to connect your wire to the secondary side. What you have there is an open circuit. Edited by user Sunday, March 27, 2011 5:58:12 PM(UTC)

Russ, I do have a jumper running from the input to the secondary side of the transformer. The jumper is on the back of the PCB, my bad I should have posted the pic of the rear side of the pcb as well.

I tried #1 and #3 (before removing the transformer). Since I removed only one transformer I tried only on the #1 after removing. I connected the toslink on #1 and #3 and it works. The coax source is a Oppo BDP-80 blu-ray player. Edited by user Sunday, March 27, 2011 6:15:47 PM(UTC)

BTW you should definitely not be connecting TTL to those inputs as they are 75 ohm inpedance. You could damage the TOSLINK module. :EDIT: Actually I think the CS8416 can handle it fine, but its definitely not ideal, but it certainly is not good for the TOSLINK unit. :/EDIT: Edited by user Sunday, March 27, 2011 6:45:39 PM(UTC)
