Hello, I will be building a BII next month, and I'm looking for suggestions. What I want to accomplish is this: First of all, I have my main stereo system, that I will feed the BII/IVY outputs to in single ended mode. I also plan to use the volumite volume control for this system.

Secondly, I have an ADA whole house audio system. For the house system, I need a fixed volume level, single ended output. I also want to keep the two separate/isolated, meaning no buffer/splitting of the BII/IVY main stereo's outputs.

My source is a PC, and I am currently using a HiFace for USB to SPDIF, connected to an antique (don't laugh please) California Audio Labs DAC.

Would this be a possible solution:

Use a twisted pear USB Receiver DAC, feed the I2S signal to the BII, and then use the single ended outputs of the USB Receiver DAC to feed the whole house system a fixed volume level? I still want a good DAC to feed the whole house, but it's just in-walls, etc, not super critical listening...

Also, regarding the HiFace. Will the USB to I2S from Twisted Pear be as good or better than the HiFace? Am I overlooking a simpler solution? Your comments and suggestions please! Thank You! -Mike

1. Since the volumite controls the digital you will not be able to provide both a fixed level and a variable level from a single Buffalo II. Why not spring for two if you really want a good DAC for the in wall system. You could feed the second from the D1 connection of the first as mentioned in the dual mono thread.

2. The HiFace is asynchronous and supports higher sample rates than the 48 K limited USB receiver DAC. Feeding the Buffalo II from this would limit its performance and not sound as good as the HiFace. This item is sold for its ability to receive USB digital audio and output I2S not the sound quality of the DAC which is not that great.

3. If the other Twisted Pear offerings are any indication I suspect that the yet to be released USB to I2S controller will be even better than the HiFace.

Thanks for the reply! So, the HiFace is still the way to go for the time being... I may end up using two buffalo II DACs eventually. Is there any good way to split the SPDIF? So for example, my finished unit could have a SPDIF in, SPDIF out, and L/R audio out? By good way I mean splitting the signal with no degradation of the SPDIF feeding the BII? How about a transformer I can use to accomplish this split of the SPDIF?

I would suggest doing it the same way as SPDIF to a dual mono setup, only now you don't set left/right but keep everything default. You could even put the Volumite on one of the DACs. From the Integration Guide:
"When using SPDIF with a dual mono setup do not run parallel input wires to both DAC boards. The termination would no longer be 75Ω, as both boards have a 75Ω termination resistor on-board.
Instead of sending it to two boards (going direct into SPDIF on both DACs) feed the SPDIF into one of the DACs as you normally would do with the SPDIF switch closed (ON) as usual. Then wire from GND and D1 on that DAC to GND and D1 on the second DAC and keep the SPDIF switch open (OFF) on the second DAC.

Now you have a single termination for the SPDIF and you will be feeding the second DAC with a TTL signal from the comparator of the first DAC."
