Russ, could be possible and I agree with you. Thats why I want to try with arduino to get it working then I can order a ATTiny and program it. Could you send the code for WM8740, even the method which handles the volume up/down is enough. The WM8740 firmware itself works just fine. I think what happened in your case is that you initially had the board mis-configured.
It is quite simple to control the WM8740 via SPI. It should not be hard to pull off using any controller. In fact you could just get an AVR dragon and program another Atiny85. I will post the source code soon.
