Hello all, I'm going to try to connect in S/PDIF input of my Buffalo-II the hiFace USB interface. Could I have a saturation problem with Buffalo due the hiFace out-specs (about 2V) output signal? Thanks.

The Buffalo's S/PDIF input can accept either consumer-level (0.5V p-p) or TTL-level. The chip itself uses TTL-level, and there is an optional comparator at the input to convert consumer-level signals to TTL. There is a DIP switch that routes the signal to the appropriate interface.

Thanks Brian but with hiFace SPDIF signal (2V) I have to choose Consumer or TTL SPDIF in Buffalo input?

Hi, I have the same problem, I drive the BII with hiface, and the Foobar volume is -10dB, otherwise BII go in saturation an distortion. I try Brian configuration (signal to D1 and GND, SPDF switch open) but BII don't lock the signal. Wath I can do? Thanks to all! Daniele.

These two issues are unrelated (S/PDIF voltage does not correlate to signal volume). If you are able to get it to lock using the comparator but not without it, by all means use the comparator. What are you using for an output stage with the Buffalo? You may need to reduce gain to deal with the gain being provided in software.

Ok I'd like to report the same experience. Just bought an hiface pen ( bnc). I tried the D1 input, switching spdif to off but no lock. So with consumer input all ok...no saturation. Sound excellent G

Hi,
Just like many others have done in the past, I am going to be buying a M2Tech Hiface USB interface to use with my Buffalo II. From the discussions above I know that the 2v output is not an issue. I was hoping someone could explain what is the optimum way to setup this up. I know that the impendence should be kept at 75 ohm, but what is the best way to achieve that? Does it just mean using a 75 ohm coaxial cable? How should I be terminating it at the buffalo end, is it just chassis rca socket -> shielded cable -> buffalo input (I assume the buffalo already has a 75 ohm resistor between SPDIF input and ground?) Also, is there any difference between RCA and BNC other than termination?
Any help from those with a similar setup would be appreciated.

The best way to achieve 75 ohm impedance is to keep everything 75 ohm as any deviation from the 75 ohm standard will cause reflections in the system. So use 75 ohm coax cable, chassis part and internally also use 75 ohm cable. The cheapest way to do that is by using BNC. RCA at 75 ohm is much more expensive.

Before I go order all these parts, could someone please check this combination would result in true '75ohm'. 1) M2Tech Hi-Face BNC version (unmodded) 2) Custom made Belden 1694A & Canare BNC 2 metre Digital Coax cable (from ebay) 3) AMPHENOL BNC Jack for chassis - http://uk.farnell.com/am...khead-ins-75r/dp/11112894) RG59B/U 75Ω Coax Cable for internal wiring - http://www.maplin.co.uk/...-u-75-ohm-coax-cable-260With the RG59, I connect the copper screen to Buffalo GND and the solid centre conductor to SPDIF? If anyone has a picture of how they have terminated the coax inside the chassis, I would really appreciate it if they can post it. Sorry for all the newbie questions. I just want to get it right :) Thanks

I did it a little different (tight fit) though eliminating internal coax wire. I took a PCB BNC socket and straighten the 90 degrees bent legs. Now they slights nicely into the header on the BII. Edited by user Sunday, May 15, 2011 4:41:09 AM(UTC)

1. That should be 75 ohm. 2. Belden is excellent cable, 75 ohm. Canare BNC is 75 ohm. 3. Amphenol is also a well know connector manufacturer, this version is 75 ohm also. 4. That's 75 ohm cable, although I would prefer the Belden cable. Perhaps that e-bay offer could throw in a metre of Belden? Correct

Good to know I am on the right track.
avr300: I am likely to adopt what you have done. A very good idea indeed and keeps the signal path very short (can't be shorter). Are there any cons of using this approach?

It's a h... to get the BII out of it's cage when modification has to be applied. Besides that, no. It also gives you ultra short signal path on the analogue side. Edited by user Sunday, May 15, 2011 1:51:24 PM(UTC)
