I'm building a two-box setup with DAC and receiver/control units in separate cabinets.
I have worked out how to transfer the signal between the two (galvanically isolated I2S), but I'm not sure how and if I can galvanically isolate the I2C signal (including the ground line). The volumite (and hopefully soon) AC2 will not be located in the same cabinet as the buffalo.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Nic

Hi Nic,

The Analog Devices ADuM solutions are specifically designed to isolate I2C...

Try an IL715

Actually I have ordered an IL715 chip to play with for galvanic isolation of I2S/DSD. I don't think the speeds needed for I2C transmission is so fast that something like IL715 is needed. Also I have the impression that the IL715 cannot be used for I2C as it is essentially one-way isolator which does not support bi-directional communication, at least not on a single channel.
Cheers,
Nic

There are bidirectional i2c-specific digital isolator ICs:
Silicon Labs Si8400/Si8401/Si8405,
Analog Devices ADuM1250/ADuM1251/ADuM2250/ADuM2251

See
1. John Gammel, "Adding bidirectional I2C digital isolation to your embedded design" Embedded.com Jan 30, 2009
2. Silicon Laboratories, Inc., Si8400/05 data sheet.
3. Silicon Laboratories, Inc., AN352: Low-Cost, High-Speed I2C Isolation with Digital Isolators
4. Silicon Laboratories, Inc., AN553: Decoupling recommendations for Si84XX Digital Isolators

BTW i'm starting the development of digitaly isolated "extender"
for LVDS-transmitting 2*(2*i2s) and 2-multiplexed*(4-multiplexed*i2c)
from controller (LinuxBox with i2s-modded 7.1 soundcard and modded Hifiduino) to
external 2 * (3*Buffalo2 + 3*IVY3 + 3*UcD400HG)'s via 2 HDMI cables.
It's for tri-amped 3-way stereo-monitors.

The only problem i see currently is 4-layer PCB tracing...
I should learn PCAD or find someone how can do it for me :(

I can show only pictures of several built Buffalo2+IVY3+UcD400HG+PSUs.
The rest is at design stage, with reading some forums (and part's delivery awaiting)...

I have now implemented galvanic isolation of the I2C using the ADUM1250 chip - really easy using a small SOIC8 to DIL PCB. I did not expect any benefit sonically, but it works flawlessly and I got my galvanic isolation :-)
I'm now trying the isolation of I2S with an IL715 chip.
