I use my Buffalo DAC with a single BNC SPDIF input, and an ethernet cable connected to the DSD output to my Phillips 963SA. When I want to listen to a different SPDIF source, I switch the cable, and when I want to listen to SACD, I switch the tiny i2s/spdif switch on the buffalo.

I would like to simplify my switching.

Without access to an i2s switch, I am thinking that I could set the Buffalo to i2s input, attach a high quality RJ45 jack to the i2s input on the Buffalo, install the MUX with i2s output and a short (inches) ethernet cable that connects to the RJ45. This way I could switch SPDIF sources with the MUX, and then switch the ethernet cable to connect DSD.

Are there any problems with this setup? If I keep the ethernet cable between the MUX and the i2s input on the Buffalo very short, will there be any detrimental effect from using the RJ45 connector instead of a direct connection?

It would be great if there was a way to externally switch the tiny i2s/spdif switch on the buffalo, but without being able to do that, and not wanting to open up the DAC every time I need to switch, is there a better solution than the one I outlined above?

Thank you for your time and suggestions.

Aaron.

You could solder wires to each side of the switch and switch from an external SPST switch

That would route the s/pdif around your case a bit, but it is possible.
