That would require at least a dual trace scope that can measure up to 10Mhz analog BW so you can compare the data edges vs the L/R edges. Russ, can you propose other ways of determining?

When I was playing with a CDROM player, I remember getting no sound if the data format did not match. Since Mr Espley is getting distorted sound my bet is that the format matches. I am just guessing that sample rate mismatch will cause the distortion.

It actually more likely the format is wrong. Because if the sample rate were wrong you wouldn't get a lock at all. If the format is wrong, you would just some funky sounding stuff. :)

The simplest thing to do is simply to rotate through the format setting and see if one works. :)

Good news. Problem sorted.
After a bit of Googling I came across a similar project, Hirez SACD and DVD-A output from the DV575.
Apparently, the output from the pioneer is left justified. I configured as follows

AIF/MS 0
TXSRC 1
AIFCONF1 1
AIFCONF0 0

Many thanks for your support.:d/

Awesome. I was pretty confident that was the issue. Cheers!

Very good!. Leaned something new.

Jon, do you know the sample rate of the resulting PCM output?

The DSD is converted to 24/88.2kHz

Check out http://freerider.dyndns..../anlage/HiresAudio_E.htm
and also the forum link at the bottom of the page. This is where I found out that the digital output is left justified.
Interesting stuff.

I have to ask... why not tap the DSD signals and feed them to the DAC?

I have a PCM DAC Buffalo-I
Actually I didn't realise there was a DSD input but I want to have more than one digital source anyway.

Transceiver update:

The circuit worked fine for a while, but I was never totally happy about the grounding being coupled to the DAC.
Then one day I got a set of discs that were distorting on climaxes. I put a pulse transformer on the SPDIF output and problem was solved. In fact, all round sound quality improved.
