Neither LED is illuminating on my Buff II board. They are installed in the correct orientation (flat side of led aligned with graphic).

I have tried several different sources, both with "consumer" set up and TTL setup (D1, switch off).

I verified correct voltage and current of the Placid supply with the Buffalo connected and operating. The AVCC supply LEDS illuminate.

There is no signal output.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

This is not my first DAC project, so I'm not entirely clueless...

Boudy,

It's kind of a weird way of doing it; but after you submit the original post, you have to go back and edit it and then it will allow you to add photos to the post. There should be an edit post button on your original post. I am definately not an expert at the reasons for the BII not locking, so I will let someone else answer after you post the pics. Hope this helps.

Neither LED's you said ? Automute will be lit after a coldstart.

Have you checked the supply voltage ?

I had a similar problem (see this thread) and it was caused by a missing L2 component on the bottom side of Buffalo II.
What is the voltage you measure over the ADDR header?
Cheers,
Nic

Thanks I don't see any missing components. All of the voltages read as expected (3.3v). Vdd is 1.22.

I haven't tried a reset yet.

It is possible you have the two LEDs in backward?

Possible? Yes but as I said in the original post, the flat sides of the LEDs are aligned with the flat spot on the graphic.

Would an incorrect orientation snuff the output?

Hi Boudy

Are the SPDIF input wires the right way round? I.e. is the yellow wire connected to th input signal, and the mauve to the input ground?

Unlikely you've made this error, but it would fit the facts!

One other thing to try is removing the on-board controller. It should still lock if it is not there.

Yes the yellow wire goes to the center pin.

Removing the chip from the socket has no effect.

Now we have to shoot wildly..

Check for continuity from the BNC (or RCA) to the corresponding solder pads under the terminal block. Sometimes the terminal blocks has been fooling people.

editing myself. Forget the continuity again (or check it).

With no input applied automute shall be lit after a cold start.

What is the current the Placid provides, and what amount of shunt are you measuring?

Slight progress. I resoldered the Mute LED and now it comes on.

I resoldered the pins for the SPDIF connector. Then I moved the SPDIF connection from my existing DAC (which is playing fine) to the Buffalo and still no joy. Mute LED stays on. The source (Transporter and SB3) and the BNC cable seem fine. I measure continuity from the source end of the cable to the board for both ground and signal.

I could remove the green header and solder the wires from the BNC connector directly to the board.

Voltage across R8 is .34V which indicates 340mA.

Voltage across R3 is .059V which indicates 59mA are shunted.

Output voltage is exactly 5.5v.

"The customer is always a moron..."

When switching between Consumer and TTL SPIF setups I neglected to move the SPDIF switch back...durr!

Bad solder joints, ugh Brick wall

Didn't have a single issue with the assembly with the Placid.

Anyways its now playing music. Assembly of the Legato is next...

Thanks for all of the suggestions.
